Anne - 01 Apr 2005 08:29 GMT After the weekend the office computer wiped the identities and is not accepting new once when typed in. Anyone any ideas? Some worms have been removed since, but this has not solved the identity problem. I'm using IE6 (so also OE6) with all security updates available for Win98SE. Thank you.

Are you getting a specific error message when you try to add a new identity? Another thought is that even though you've removed them from the GUI that OE has shown you are the files actually really deleted? In other words even though they're no longer showing have they really been deleted from where ever it is on your drive that you had them stored?

Anne - 01 Apr 2005 15:55 GMT Thanks Galen for your response. The error is that there is no current identity select your identity named below. But no identity is shown. When looking under Windows/Identities there still is the folder with the information. Thanks again. Anne

START | Run type in Regedit and press ENTER
Click on the + sign next to HKEY_CURRENT_USER Click on the + sign next to Identities Do you see subkeys listed that have numbers and letters within braces { }? Right click on the Identities name and select Rename rename it to Identities.org Close Regedit Start OE. You should be prompted to fill in the information as you did when OE started the first time.
See if that will work for you to get it started. Afterwards, you can search the hidden files for Inbox.dbx and locate the old dbx file and import those in but fiist, see if you can get OE running this way and I'll add addition info on how to get the old messages back.
Anne - 01 Apr 2005 15:57 GMT I'll try on Monday and let you know the result. Thanks Anne

Anne - 07 Apr 2005 13:29 GMT I looked at the registry with regedit. The identities are not mentioned under hkey-current-user, but are under hkey-users. Should I rename that one, or copy it to hkey-current-user? For your information, this computer is on a lan with one other computer which is the server. Thanks again.

HKEY_CURRENT_USER lists the Registry entries for the Windows user you are logged into. HKEY_USERS lists (I think) all of the users and should only be altered with great care and after exporting anything you are going to change.

Anne - 25 Apr 2005 11:49 GMT Could it be that she logged on under a different identity, used OE and not logged off correctly, and shut the computer off. Then on Monday logged on under her own identity and then OE was still "hanging" in the other identity?
She is now the only user of the computer. Could I just export and save the identities key and subkeys now mentioned under USERS, and then copy them under current_user?
Pls advise.

Anne - 26 Apr 2005 08:51 GMT No its not working at all!!! Could I export the registry, edit it (read copy identities key and subkey from Users/.Default/identities to current-user/) and then import this edited Registry, reboot the machine, and would it then work? I'm really at a total loss here.

How to Reinstall or Repair Internet Explorer and Outlook Express in Windows XP http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=318378 Make sure your anti-virus is turned off. The section Windows XP and Windows XP SP1: Edit the registry and install Internet Explorer 6 works on earlier versions of Windows.

DGuess - 08 Apr 2005 17:58 GMT No, don't rename that one at all.
If you don't have an Identities subkey under HKEY_CURRENT_USER then OE isn't set up to run. If there is an Identities subkey there, it may be damaged and renaming it and only it is what you need to rename. None no where else.

Any suggestions how to import the Emails? Thanks again.

Confirm the following for me
HKEY_CURRENT_USER has no Identities subkey? HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Identities have no {USER_ID} subkeys in it?
HKEY_USERS does have the previous subkeys?
Ok, HKEY_CURRENT_USER has to exist for an Identitiy ({USER_ID}) to be created. If no Identities subkey in HKCU, then you will need to create one.
Start Regedit and click on HKEY_CURRENT_USER Click on Edit menu then select New then select KEY Type in Identities exactly as it is spelled above and press ENTER
Now close regedit and start OE.
Anne - 14 Apr 2005 12:50 GMT Just to be on the safe side.
At HKEY_USERS there is .DEFAULT which has IDENTITIES which as a key {7a....}. Also HKEY-USERS has a folder MAX (the user) which has [ab] Default (value not set).
So now I'm to go to HKEY_CURRENT_USER, klick on NEW and enter there the key as is mentioned under HKEY_USERS / .DEFAULT / IDENTITIES namely {7a.....}?
If so please confirm once more. Thanks a lot!

Rename HKEY_USER\Identitiies to HKEY_USER\Identities.org

HKEY_CURRENT_USER has no Identities subkey? HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Identities have no {USER_ID} subkeys in it?
>> > So I have to install IE6 with SP 1 again (which includes OE)? >> > Any suggestions how to import the Emails? [quoted text clipped - 19 lines] >> >> Now close regedit and start OE. Anne - 15 Apr 2005 09:41 GMT I confirm: HKEY_CURRENT_USER does not have a subkey IDENTITIES and HKEY_CURRENT_USER does not have a subkey IDENTITIES which then also does not have a subkey {USER_ID}
and: The only {USER_ID} subkey of IDENTITIES is as a subkey of .DEFAULT as a subkey of HKEY_USERS.
So I'll rename the HKEY_USER \ .DEFAULT \ IDENTITIES {USER_ID} to HKEY_USER \ .DEFAULT \ IDENTITIES.ORG?
thanks again
therefore also NO {USER_ID} subkey in HKEY_CURRENT_USER\IDENTITIES

DGuess - 16 Apr 2005 20:38 GMT rename the HKEY_USER \ .DEFAULT \ IDENTITIES to HKEY_USER \ .DEFAULT \ IDENTITIES.ORG?
create a subkey in HKEY_CURRENT_USER named Identities
That's all
Then start OE and it should prompt you for all the info to get it running.
Anne - 17 Apr 2005 08:51 GMT OK, I'll do that on Monday. Thanks again.

When I ran regedit and clicked on HKEY_CURRENT_USER, and on Edit and NEWand KEY. Then I tried to type in 'Identities' but it did not accept it. What is going wrong? After that should I just close regedit and restart OE? Would reinstalling OE not solve this problem faster?
Thanks again.

Then find the Identities key and right click on it and choose export and save it. Then right click on it and choose Delete and then open OE and see it it works.

> How? > [quoted text clipped - 26 lines] >> >> > Then start OE and it should prompt you for all the info to get it >> >> > running. Anne - 26 Apr 2005 09:08 GMT That is: deleting the key IDENTITIES (and subkeys) from HKEY_USERS/.Default/ ? Because there is no "identities" in KHEY_CURRENT_USER. There are also no subkeys under KHEY_CURRENT_USER/Software. Under HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run there is an entry: "Rundll32.exe "c:program~\IEMENU~1\tbextn.dll" Dllshowtb" "exshow95.exe" Could this be a result of spyware or a virus which was not undone during the cleaning?
When trying to start OE, and through Manage Identities, entering a new identity and yes switch to this identity the error message is: "The current identity could not be cha nged because one of the applications was unable to switch. Close any open dialog boxes in other applications before trying again."

Steve Cochran - 26 Apr 2005 12:59 GMT That is most likely some sort of crapware. Go to Start | Run and type msconfig. Then disable all startup items and reboot.
Then see what problems you may have that persist.
You also might consider reinstalling IE and OE. See www.oehelp.com/OETips.aspx#5 That method will also work for Win98SE.

Anne - 26 Apr 2005 09:13 GMT Please also see what I replied to Frank Sanders, any suggestions? There seems to be a lot wrong in the registry when this system starts up this way. When starting as a new identity at startup (Networking Username and Password), OE does work! However the desktop is completely wrong and not all programs seem to be installed. Please advise.
