That's a function of the antivirus program installed. Open the antivirus
program and disable email scanning, then reset the servers to the correct
addresses and keep the email scanning disabled.

Hi Jim,
thanks, I will do so.. I recall seeing this before in combination with the
Anti-virus. I used to have Norton installed on that machine, but have Avast
now...
I am not sure if I like Avast as alternative... to be honest. I'll have a
look at it tomorrow!
Thanks as always!

Just to add to this conversation a bit...
The detection rates of Avast! are pretty good. If you don't like it and are
willing to accept a substitute with lower detection rates according to this
site:

Then www.grisoft.com has a free AV product called AVG. Personally I'd avoid
Symantec (Norton) for various stability issues and for resource concerns. I
use KAV which is a bit of a resource hog but worth it in my opinion.
Using the mail scanning function of your AV product is not really required
if your AV is already set to offer real time protection.

Your Anti-virus (or anti-spam) software changes the POP3 server name to localhost or
127.0.0.1, in order to scan the e-mail as it downloads. If this prevents you from
downloading mail, then that software is malfunctioning. Check with that software
manufacturer for update or configuration help, or disable that software from scanning
e-mail.
As long as your anti-virus software is set to scan files as they are opened, scanning
e-mail as it downloads is unnecessary and prone to problems.
