Using Win98 and OE6 I can't get my email. I get the following error message:
"The connection to the server has failed. Account: 'pop.east.cox.net',
Server: 'pop.east.cox.net', Protocol: POP3, Port: 1110, Secure(SSL): No,
Socket Error: 10060, Error Number: 0x800CCC0E".

A Cox tech ran some tests and thinks it is caused by Zone Alarm.

Any one have this problem and any suggestion on what I can do about it.

Thanks

Jim

Well, the first question is--Is it caused by Zone Alarm? It's easy to find
out. First try a Send/Receive with ZA running, and assuming it fails, exit
ZA and try to do a Send/Receive again. What happens? If it still fails,
uninstall ZA in Add/Remove Programs, restart, then try again. What happens?

Thanks. I did that then reinstalled ZA5-no change. Then downloaded and
installed ZA6 and still the same problems.

I just set up an email account with HOTMAIL and tried to send both ways -
still no success.

This problem seemed to happen when I tried to change identities. I had not
done that in many months.

Not sure if I understood you correctly. Does the Send/Receive work when ZA
is not running or uninstalled?

No, it did not work either way, whether ZA was installed or uninstalled.

Then ZA isn't the problem. Jim Pickering has the answer for you in your
other thread.

Thanks to all who responded to my post.

For the benefit of those who followed this thread changing the Port from
1110 to 110 corrected the problem.

Thanks again , Jim

Thanks PA Bear,

That lets me send and receive and all seems normal.

However I have lost my old email and address book - probably got corrupted
in the process. Can you tell me where these files and other config files are
kept in OE. I may be able to recover most of them from a backup tape.

Ever thankful for your help.

(_mac gave you the fix, not me.)

You lost them?...

_Messages:_

OE Tools>Options>Maintenance>Store folder will reveal the location of your
current Identity's store.  Write it down.

In Windows Explorer, search for " *.dbx " (w/out the quotes).  Any found
which are not located in your current store will most likely be the "lost"
ones.  You can Import them using File>Import>Messages....

NB: If you changed the location of your identity's store without first
locating the folder to hold the store, your messages are *history* with no
hopes of recovery.

_Address Book:_

Address Book Help > About will reveal the location of your current Address
Book.  Address Book extension is WAB (e.g., name.wab); The backup copy of
Address Book maintained automatically by Windows has a .WAB~ extension
(e.g., name.wab~), in your current state.

In Windows Explorer, search for " *.wa~ " (w/out the quotes).  Any WAB file
found may be imported into your current Address Book.  If you only find the
backup (e.g., name.wab~), rename it to 'name1.wab'; you can then open it and
import it into your current Address Book.

I tried to cancel this, but just in case...

Never mind the previous. Saw your other post right afterwards.
