Disable email scanning by your anti-virus application. It provides no
additional protection, it's probably causing the Time Out/Disconnect and
even Symantec says it's not necessary:
<paste>
Disabling Email Scanning does not leave you unprotected against viruses that
are distributed as email attachments. Norton AntiVirus Auto-Protect scans
incoming files as they are saved to your hard drive, including email and
email attachments. Email Scanning is just another layer on top of this. To
make sure that Auto-Protect is providing the maximum protection, keep
Auto-Protect enabled and run LiveUpdate regularly to ensure that you have
the most recent virus definitions.

Attachments add a markup of ~40% to a message: A 10KB message with a 1MB
attachment = 1.4MB email. Note, too, that some ISPs won't allow you to send
such large emails.
General OE Caveats:
- Don't use Inbox or Sent Items to archive messages. Move them to local
folders created for this purpose.
- Empty Deleted Items folder daily.
- Disable Background Compacting [N/A in SP2] and frequently perform a manual
compact of all OE folders while "working offline". More at

I've already done that, don't use it at all. Many times after a disconnect,
it'll go through properly. But there's no anticipating either of these
responses to a large email.
More suggestions?
thanks.

OE Help
search
large messages
gives the following answer
Many e-mail and news servers limit the size of the messages you can receive
and send. Usually this limit is one megabyte (1 MB) per message, including
all attached files.
With Outlook Express, you can send large messages or files to e-mail and
news servers that have size limits, by breaking the messages into smaller
ones. When the group of messages is received, the e-mail program combines
them into one message.
On the Tools menu, click Accounts.
On either the Mail or News tab, click Properties.
On the Advanced tab, select the Break apart messages larger than x KB check
box and then enter the maximum file size the server will allow.

Bob,
I too am suffering from the problem you describe. I have tried all the fixes
in the other similar posts on this board to no avail. I uninstalled McAfee,
Zone Alarm and had a totally unprotected computer. It still failed when an
attachment over 1.5 MBytes is sent.
My ISP assures me that I can send large attachments. They did however suggest
I tick the OE "split large messages" box set to 500K. The large email I sent
thereafter contained three separate files and was totally unreadable by all
recipients - back out of there! So I am with you and seemingly many other OE
6.0 users.
I sent an email containing a 3.0 MByte attachment at the end of August
using Version 5.xx, no problem. Upgraded to 6.0 shortly after and am now dead
in the water as far as large attachments are concerned. I can go to my mail
box on my ISP, attach a file from my PC. which then downloads to the ISP OK,
then I can send it from there - no problem, but not what I want to do all the
time! This makes me think the problem lies with OE 6.0.
I hope we do get a fix for this problem soon.
