MSNMSGR Illegal operation when starting OE

It has been a while since I last made any non-trivial system changes
to my 3-year-old system, but for the past couple of days when I start
up Outlook Express or change Identities the familiar Microsoft error
box pops up for MSNMSGR saying "This program has performed an illegal
operation and will be shut down".  Clicking the Details button shows
"MSNMSGR caused an invalid page fault in module <unknown> at
0000:0000012c".

Experimentation shows that the error message seems to appear only when
two conditions are met--the identity must have mail waiting, and MSN
Messenger is NOT running.

I am current with all critical updates installed from running Windows
Update.  Searching at the Microsoft site and Googling for the message
has been fruitless.  I get plenty of hits but nothing specific to
MSMSGR.  Rebooting has not fixed the problem, nor has running the IE
repair.  I'd appreciate hearing from anyone who has encountered this
same problem and found the fix.

My system configuration:
 Win98SE,
 IE v6.0.2800.1106CO,
 OE v6.00.2800.1123,
 MSN Messenger v6.0.0602.

For what it's worth I have cable broadband, ZoneAlarm v3.7.202, and
NAV2003 v9.05.15.

Thanks, Max

Was OE (and everything else) closed when you installed MSNMSGR 6.0?

Close OE.

Start>Run>Regedit> navigate to this key:

HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT
   \CLSID
       \{FB7199AB-79BF-11d2-8D94-0000F875C541}
           \InProcServer32

In the right-hand pane, double-click on the (Default) value and delete
whatever is entered there, leaving it blank. Click OK. Now perform exactly
the same step with the key directly underneath, namely

HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT
   \CLSID
       \{FB7199AB-79BF-11d2-8D94-0000F875C541}
           \LocalServer32

(from http://insideoe.tomsterdam.com/problems/performance.htm#slowstart)

Suggest always switching identities via File>Exit and Logoff Identity or use
the file on this page to Force Identity Logon:

PA Bear, three days have gone by since I deleted those default values
as you suggested and so far the MSNMSGR problem has not recurred.  I
just checked and the values are still null.  Your suggestion seems to
have worked just fine.  Thanks.

One question--why when changing identities do you recommend File/Exit
and Logoff?  File/Switch Identity has always worked just fine for me,
and it's sure easier and quicker.  Or maybe it just seems to be
working fine but is potentially a problem just waiting to bite me??
Thanks again.

YW.  If you install MSNMSGR again (or upgrade), you'll find them back.

Bonus #1: Look in Start>Run>MSCONFIG>Startup tab for LoadQM.  You may want
to uncheck it.  ("Messenger, phone home.  Love, MSN")

Despite the handy presence of Switch Identities in the File dropdown menu,
the "official" MS line is to always leave an Identity via File>Exit and
Logoff Identity.  I have no idea why.

*Some* OE6-SP1 users are (still) suffering from a Switch Identities problem
after installing Q330994/April '03 Cumulative Patch for Outlook Express.
YMMV.

Bonus #2: A new Cumulative Patch for Internet Explorer was released today.

I had this exact problem.  Goto Start>Contol Panel>
Add/Remove Programs.  Then find MSN messenger and hit
uninstall.  It will bring up the repair dialogue.  Hit
repair.  This worked for me.

Sub, thanks for the suggestion.  It was about two weeks ago that I
gave up trying to fix the problem on my own and hollered for help.
I'm pretty sure I had already done the uninstall/reinstall of MSN
Messenger, but maybe not since I don't recall a repair dialogue.

PABear offered a suggestion that I followed and the problem has not
resurfaced since.  I wanted to give it a couple of days to make sure
the problem didn't pop up again before responding to PABear that his
suggestion seemed to work.  By then it had slipped my mind and I
forgot to followup with the good news and express my heartfelt thanks
to him.  I'll take that opportunity now...

PABear, thanks ever so much for your suggestion.  The MSNMSGR problem
has been fixed.  I'm just sorry I forgot to give the appropriate
feedback.
