Can I reinsall windows 98 second edtion without lossing every thing on my
computer.  I install office 97 and I lossed my outlook express 6. and now I
can't down loads things?

Installing Office won't lose Outlook Express although it could make OE
no longer the default mail program.

As for reinstalling Windows, how much you lose depends on how you
reinstall.  If you use a Recovery CD from the PC manufacturer that
resets to the factory defaults, you lose everything because it reformats
the hard drive.

If you install Windows over itself, most things survive.  If you install
Windows to a new folder, you'll have to also reinstall your
applications.

Have you read the replies we gave you before? Have you tried the solutions
that were offered?

yep I have tryed all that I got. but I can't download things that I can try.
I went to the help button on the ie 98. its says Im run internet exp. 5.  I'm
I right to say that windows 98 se. is in that group?  when I remove that
office 97 I must have removed oe.6 also.

I can't say that I understand all that you wrote. If you're running IE5,
then I'm almost certain that you *can't* have been running OE6. (I admit, I
haven't actually tried that one.)

So, let's see if we have this right. Please answer all items below:

As per suggestions, you uninstalled Office 97. Right? Completely?

After uninstalling Office, you:

Tried IE Repair?

Tried reinstalling IE/OE using Add/Remove Programs?

What do you mean you can't download things? Are you talking only about email
messages, or is IE not functioning also?

Understand that OE did not get removed by Office. What happened is that
Outlook 97 took over OE's chores. If *all* you did was to install Office 97,
you should be able to open OE and use it normally. All that should have
happened is that when you use a MAILTO: link, Outlook would open instead of
Outlook Express.

So... Can you use Internet Explorer from the problem machine? If not, then
the problem is an entirely much larger one that previously understood, and
the remedy is to download IE6 installation files using another computer,
burning them to a CD, and then installing IE/OE6 from the CD. Not really
that difficult, but I'd rather not go into the details until I'm certain of
your situation.

So you really can't use Internet Explorer, can you? If you can, download and
run this file:

http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/info.aspx?na=90&p=&SrcDisplayLang=en&SrcCateg
oryId=&SrcFamilyId=1e1550cb-5e5d-48f5-b02b-20b602228de6&u=http%3a%2f%2fdownload.
microsoft.com%2fdownload%2fie6sp1%2ffinrel%2f6_sp1%2fW98NT42KMeXP%2fEN-US%2fie6s
etup.exe

If that link doesn't make it through your newsreader intact, use this one:
http://tinyurl.com/huzja

If you can't get this to download, you'll have to do it on someone else's
machine, one that can burn CDs. Download and run the installer. I'll give
instructions below for downloading the rest of the files you'll need.

Always choose the "Minimal or Custom" installation option, then select all
components except multi-language (unless you need something besides
English.) If you are doing this on the problem machine, just continue to
install after selecting components. If you are doing this on some other
machine, after selecting components, click on the Advanced button. I can't
tell you the exact steps, but this Advanced section allows you to download
the files for later installation. Make a new folder called IE6 to download
the files to, and make sure to choose the appropriate OS that you will
install to. Once the download has finished, you can burn the whole folder to
a CD and then run IE6SETP.EXE from that CD when you get to your problem
machine.

Does the file IE6Setup.exe exist on the machine?
