I have been asked to help someone to establish internet connectivity and OE
for email.
It is a Windows 98 system of some age and unknown history. It has IE 5 or
maybe 5.5 on board.
Getting IE to connect to dial up was no problem but OE just would not play
ball. It was only after going to and fro' all the settings I noticed that at
the top of the OE title bar it said something like " outlook express
provided by AOL"
My guess is that at some time in the past AOL was the ISP and its tentacles
are still attached to OE. I suppose it refuses to connect to anything other
than AOL and this is not the current ISP. When starting the computer the
AOL/OE page is one of the first thing to open and as it cannot be used I
have Unchecked OE in Windows components.
So my question is how do I get OE back into working order as the user would
like rather than rely on web mail.

First check the settings under Tools | Options | Connection and Tools |
Accounts | Mail | Properties | Connection and see if there is something
there you can fix.
You can reinstall OE using the method here: www.oehelp.com/OETips.aspx#5
which used to work for Win98, but since MS has discontinued support for
Win98, I don't know if it still works or not.
I would play with the account settings first.
