Good day to every one. Wish I'm able to express the problem clearly:
Working on Outlook Express 6,from Windows98:
In the Folders column, the figure seven in brackets,ie. (7) ,shows against
the
"Inbox" folder. Of course, this means there are 7 unread messages in this
folder, but
-- the Inbox folder is empty--.  Let me explain a bit further:
I first noticed the problem a few days ago when, after opening all received
messages
on that particular day and after disposing of them all --both by moving some
to other
folders and by deleting the remainder, therefore by emptying the Inbox
folder -- still a
figure appeared inside brackets against the "Inbox"folder, in the folders
column.
Continued use of OE made the figure in brackets gradually go from an initial
3, to 7
as it still is today.
I haven't a clue where to look for the solution to this problem so I should
be very
grateful for any possible help. Thank you. Zef

1. Move any messages out of the Inbox to another local folder. Close OE.

2. Use Find>Files & Folders to locate INBOX.DBX

3. Delete that file.

4. Open OE.

If you are using Windows XP (though this is a Win98 newsgroup) to locate
INBOX.DBX you'll need to include Hidden and System files in the search, and
possibly also have to use Folder Options to Show Hidden files and folders.
If you find more than one file named INBOX.DBX, you need to stop, open OE,
go to Tools>Options>Maintenance tab>Store Folder button, and write down the
name of the store folder. Then \delete INBOX.DBX from that folder.

Thanks to Gary S. Terhune for his reply. I will try as suggested and report results as soon as possible.

A very good day to everyone.
Further to the previous message, I should like to report :
1. First, I used "FIND" from the start menu and instructed the program to
locate INBOX.DBX
It located not one but  3 files named so. The oldest from 2003, another from
2004 and a third from 2006.
2. I used caution and decided not to delete all three files, but rather
rename each one,instead.
3. Following the path for each ,on Windows Explorer (it could also be done
on MSDOS) I renamed the oldest file INBOX03.DBX,the next INBOX04.DBX and
the last one INBOX06.DBX.
This has,so far, solved the problem  and Outlook Express looks now normal.

A special thanks to Gary S.Terhune. By the way,do you   advise any further
action ?
Thanks and goodbye for now.Zef

There's a standard blurb about how to maintain OE, but I don't have it on my
clipboard. Basically, you want to keep the default folders (Inbox, Sent
Items, Deleted) fairly empty. Move Inbox and Sent messages to archive
folders on a regular basis. You also want to (File>Folder>) Compact All
Folders regularly, preferably after setting Work Offline (File menu.)

I would suggest, however, that you can rename those old Inbox.dbx files back
to what they were. They belong to some other Identity and may contain lost
gems.

Prior to doing as suggested by Gary, go to view>current view> and deselect
'group by conversation', you may now see those spam messages?
Keyboard shortcut to that setting is Alt, V, V, G. same to return to the
view.
HTH?

Firstly your time and or timezone are set incorrectly?

You also posted using a valid email address, this will lead to you getting a
lot of Spam, so go to OE>tools>accounts>news>select the msnews
account>properties>general tab>change your address to
zefpaulo@removethissapo.pt
