Time for a little bit of culling?
The Contacts Pane appears empty if the number of contacts in the address
book is more than 999.
Turn off automatically put people in my address book when I reply
Tools>options>Send tab.

Use Find>Files & Folders to locate files with the *.WAB extension. One will
be your Outlook Express "Contacts" list. Can you open it? If so, follow
Mac's suggestion and cull some of the addresses. Before doing so, it might
be wise to Export to a CSV file.
