After several minutes of browsing I get page not found or DNS error and can
no longer brows. If I reconnect my old smaller drive in place of the newer
drive everything works fine. Comparing the Network settings between both
drives I find that the problem one has no bindings listed in the binding
window for the 3 Com or the dial up adapters. The one that works has
TCP/IP - Dial Up Adapter with the box checked on Dial up Adapter and Dial Up
Adapter 2 (VPN). The 3 Com has in the binding window TCP/IP 3 Com  Fast
EtherLink XL 10/100 Mb TX ... I assume this is what is causing the problem.

If so what do I need to do to get these bindings back?

I am running Win98SE on an old Dell GX-1 in Arizona with COX Cable. They
will not give any assistance to Win 98 users.

Bill, You might want to re-post your query in a Win98 group - this one is
for Outlook Express problems.

Thanks Kath for replying.

I had posted to the General Discussion group a few days ago when the
problem first occurred but no one answered. Also they is very little
activity in that group. I posted to this group because it said it was for
win98 and the problem does prevent me from using OE. I have posted to the
win98.networking group but have had no response there.

Would you tell me which group is the proper one?

Thanks for any help you can give.

What do you need VPN for, do you use it or is it required by your ISP (AOL
does require it's use), otherwise it's not needed unless you use Virtual
Private Networking.

Try this, remove all the Dial Up Networking and TCP\IP
Remove the NICs from Device Manager.

Reboot and let it redetect the NICs. Check to see that DUN and TCP are reset
up.

I don't think DUN is required for a broadband connection on W9x unless you
keep a backup or have a dial up connection you still use.

Trying to remember this from memory, you would have Client for MS Networks,
TCP for the NIC, File and Printer sharing and I think that's all that's
required.

Thanks for responding. I did post this in
"msnews.microsoft.public.win98.gen_discussion" after finding out that this
same forum name in "mews.west/cox.net", which I was using, didn't contain
much of the msnews forum messages. With a great deal of help from Brian S. I
believe I have a far better system than before in addition to fixing this
problem. I am going to post the results and the things I have done there
later this week as time allows.

Thanks again for your advice, which was right on, as this is what I ended up
doing as part of all the fixes I have done over several weeks. Some of the
help came from reading from you site OE Oh...
