When I open up OE and it starts to check for messages I get the following
message in a box with the header Msimn: this program has performed an
illegal operation and will be shut down. under details it is an invalid page
fault in module directdb.dll.  I am able to briefly send and receive before
it crashes. Thoughts, suggestions?

That points to corruption with one of the OE DBX files which correspond
to the folders in OE.

Since it happens on receiving, it most likely points to either Inbox.dbx
or Folders.dbx.

I'd start here:
OE won't even start
