Upon startup the otherday  , all my inbox messages were deleted .Any way to
get them back? How can I prevent this from occuring again?I run a 98
operating system.

Look in the Recycle Bin for INBOX.DBX

Do a Find on 'inbox' and see what you find. Report back.

I don't think that was implemented for Win98, but I may be wrong.

Huh! Didn't think of that. Gonna have to try it.

Yup, you're right. No backup during Compacting.

Still, it's a good idea for OP to check to see if the file by chance got
moved accidentally. Very long shot, but when the next sentence is going to
be, "They're gone!", I tend to reach for straws. Then I dig out the good old
RTT recovery software.

They can look for dbt files in the message store directory also.  OE in
later versions deletes them when it opens, but I'm not sure about Win98.

Why it happens:

http://insideoe.tomsterdam.com/problems/bugs.htm#mailgone
  http://www.microsoft.com/windows/IE/community/columns/filecorruption.mspx

Recovering the missing data: http://www.oehelp.com/OETips.aspx (#2 and #4).
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
DBXpress (faster, more powerful, with even greater functionality)
http://www.oehelp.com/DBXpress/Default.aspx
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Avoiding Such Corruption in Future:

- Don't use Inbox or Sent Items to archive messages.  Move them to local
folders created for this purpose.

- Empty Deleted Items folder daily.

- Disable Background Compacting and frequently perform a manual compact of
all OE folders while "working offline".  More at
http://www.insideoe.com/files/maintain.htm

- Disable email scanning by your anti-virus application.  It can cause
corruption (i.e., loss of messages), it provides no additional protection,
and even Symantec says it's not necessary:

<QP>
Disabling Email Scanning does not leave you unprotected against viruses that
are distributed as email attachments. Norton AntiVirus Auto-Protect scans
incoming files as they are saved to your hard drive, including email and
email attachments. Email Scanning is just another layer on top of this. To
make sure that Auto-Protect is providing the maximum protection, keep
Auto-Protect enabled and run LiveUpdate regularly to ensure that you have
the most recent virus definitions.

See www.oehelp.com/OETips.aspx#4  The extract from disk feature of DBXpress
will not work in Win98 systems, but the rest of it does.

What if the disk is moved to a 2K or XP (or Vista) system? Can DBXtract then
read directly from the disk?

DBXtract does not have the extract from disk feature.  Only DBXpress
(written later and much more powerful) has that option.

Yes, you can pull the drive and stick it into a computer with a "higher"
then WinMe OS and it the extract from disk will work.  Its only the OS that
won't handle it.

cheers,

My mistake. DBXpress, not DBXtract. Well, no matter the recovery software,
it shouldn't be run from the same drive where the data is to be recovered.
THAT disk shouldn't be used at all, period, until such recovery is done.

In an ideal world.  Sometimes that is not feasible.
