W98SE.  Had no problems until the beginning of September
when the following message started to appear:

"The connection to the server has failed.
Account: 'pop.netzero.com', Server: 'pop.netzero.com',
Protocol: POP3, Port: 110, Secure(SSL): No, Socket Error:
10061, Error Number: 0x800CCC0E"

Have deleted and added account settings, tried receiving
with all other mail accounts disabled, no dice.  May have
installed a Windows update, but no other changes.  Please
advise.

Thanks.

seems to be about Exchange, which I'm not running.  Re
netstat -an, my Properties menu for the command prompt
window doesn't contain a tab called "layout," so if the
two items do apppear, I can't see them?

16275506: I'm running McAfee Firewall, so this doesn't
directly apply.  OE was running fine with the firewall
prior to September 1.

At the very end of Q191687 it says, "It is also possible to receive this
error message when you have antivirus e-mail protection enabled on your
computer."  Disable any email scanning by the McAfee app.

Having the AV app running while installing updates can cause problems.

We've seen some worrying posts in the OE newsgroups recently about problems
with OE after installing recent McAfee updates.  Very few MVPs would allow
any McAfee app on their systems, let alone in their houses.  Disable all
McAfee apps and see if things improve.

Also try the account(s) in a new Named Identity.  McAfee may have damaged
your current one beyond repair.

Disabling McAfee had no effect.  Uninstalling Firewall did
the trick even with Viruscan still scanning e-mail.

It seems McAfee recently updated the Security Center with
a default to automatically download and install updates.
One of these new updates must have added some incompatible
aspect to Firewall (?).

This, I think, will be my last unhappy experience with
McAfee.  What AVP does MVPs recommend?

AVG

It's free.
The main anti-virus still has to be the user.

Uninstalled McAfee in its entirety, installed AVG and
Sygate Firewall (also freeware!) Looks like all the
programs are cozying up nicely.

Many thanks to you both for your help!
