There is an error box which says rulaunch (with the
microsoft logo on the side) has performed an illegal
operation. It didnt used to come on, and now it does -
dont know whats changed if anything. Now every time I go
on it comes up, usually just after I start internet.

Try McAfee support. Rulaunch is their update checker.
