Try starting win in safe - mode (press F8 during loading of windows, just
before / during you see the first W98 loading screen).

Then, first run a scandisk, followed by the defragmenter. Be sure -all-
programmes are closed (press ctrl-alt-del and disable unnecessary
programmes -> all but Explorer & Systray).
Also, disabling screensaver & power profiles may help (right - click on
desktop, properties, screen saver).

Better yet, Go to perfect disc and down load the free
trial version and defrag your computer with that. Its way
better than the windows defrag.

Better yet,
Learn how to do it. Or do you just want to become one of the ?

Why are people in here so DAMN anal? I gave her a better
tool to do her defrag. Its better than windows defrag
utility so why be so damn anal? Not everyone in here
wants to be a technical wizard. Some people just want the
job done and done right. If there is a better tool then
use it. I suggest you find that bug that crawled up your
a** and remove that.

Sure, I agree. BUT, it is only 'free' for a trial period.
Why spend the money if you don't have to. If she wants to buy it and make it
a little easier, great.

I agree with you, Its better to learn the right way to
use your defrag but some people want a quick fix. So I
just gave a suggestion. If you do download perfect disk
all you have to do is uninstall then reinstall it and you
have another 30 days. So I do agree with you but I just
try to make it easy on people. Have you ever tried to
walk someone threw a computer and they have no idea whats
what on a computer? ( I know you have) Its tough.

Try going to Safe Mode and running Scandisk first and then run the Defrag.
Or try running Scandisk in Normal Windows first.

Here are a few troubleshooting tips to consider when Scandisk
and Disk Defragmenter (Defrag) don't run correctly:
1. Restart to the Command Prompt and do a thorough Scandisk on the
drive first and repair any errors.
Restart the computer. Hold down the CTRL key while the system is
booting. This will take you to the Boot Menu then select Command
Prompt Only. Run Scandisk on the drive from there by typing SCANDISK
then press enter and let it perform a surface scan.
2. Close all running programs using Close Programs (Ctrl + Alt + Del)
  except Explorer and Systray.
3. Turn off screen savers and any power management
4. Delete Temp files and Temporary Internet Files
5. Empty the Recycle Bin
6. Do a virus scan with up to date virus software
AVG Anti-Virus - Free Download Page:
http://www.grisoft.com/us/us_dwnl_free.php
7. Disable PC-Cillin if installed
8. Turn off and disconnect DSL/Cable Modem
9. Run Ad-aware to remove any possible spyware http://www.lavasoftusa.com/

Note: Defragging in Safe Mode is another option.

DiskAction -  tray icon is a picture of a hard disk with a light that
flashes green to indicate activity. To see the last twelve processes that
accessed the disk, double-click the tray icon. Monitor several disks at
once, or launch separate instances of DiskAction to monitor each drive
separately. The color of the DiskAction tray icon will change depending on
the disk or disks you are monitoring. You can see activity on network drives
if the activity originates on your computer, and the network drive is

EndItAll2 - EndItAll 2 lists all the programs running on your system, and
lets you decide which ones to close down. The processes necessary for basic
system operation are protected from termination. From the remaining
processes, you can choose which to close, which to kill (close down
forcibly), and which to protect. Once you know which files you want to shut
down, you can configure EndItAll for automatic action via script or batch
file. This is useful for backups and defrags during off-hours. Options let
you block power management and the screen saver during operation. FREE
