Hi all :)

I've just switched from WIN 95 to WIN 98SE, but it keeps crashing by
itself, even when I'm offline or when there isn't any "heavy"
application running... the pointer get stuck, it doesn't respond even
to CTRL-ALT-DEL... have to switch off the hard way...
I've been unable to find any specific patch in the MS website, all
the patches I've seen are addressed to other, specific issues...
No antiviruses running in background, and anyway I've never seen
a virus (only plain text emails allowed, no attachments).

Anybody out there with an idea about which patch could fix that?
Richard G. Harper - 15 Nov 2003 15:12 GMT
I doubt it's a software problem at all, I'd suspect a hardware problem.
Check memory modules (RAM), power supply, or a bad or dirty cooling fan
somewhere in the system.

Sorry Richard, it's out of the question... 127 MB RAM checked and passed,
fan clean and running, and in addition, when the machine has soaked and
IS BEING OPERATED at about 10°C room temperature, it can happen after a
few minutes; other times, it may operate for hours at 22°C room temp
without a single crash...

Curious, did you have similar problems with 95 before attempting the
upgrade?
Did you upgrade over 95 or format and do a fresh install of 98?
Have you tried a free online virus scan or installed any spyware detecting
programs such as AdAware?
How many programs are running when you do a ctrl-alt-del right after a fresh
bootup?

Paolo and all,
I came to this discussion to post an almost identical
message as Paolo's about "random" and constant system
crashes.  Here's the post I had composed:

About 2 weeks ago my computer became extremely unstable,
after 3 years of normal operation under Win98 SE.  I had
not added any new software to cause it, or made any
significant changes, that I'm aware of.  There's the
slight possibility it was due to a flash upgrade, but I
believe that upgrade occurred as a result of trying to fix
the problem. The system crashes unpredictably in all
software packages (primarily Corel Suite 8 and 2000,
Eudora Pro 5, Netscape 7.1 and IE 6 using cable modem).  I
have no viruses. I did extensive RAM testing: no flaky
chips (don't know if tests checked bios; definitely did
not test video card RAM). The system is prone to crash
even at night when I'm not running software. Scandisk
finds no problems, including the thorough scan. I have now
uninstalled all screensavers, and virus scan software, and
just about anything running in background. Have
reinstalled Win 98 a number of times (but not after
reformatting, or uninstalling everything).  Have simplifed
the video driver but that didn't help.  Strangely, when I
reduced Graphics-Hardware-Acceleration from "full" down
to "none" (in 4 steps) the system became even more
unstable at any level below "full." Have not reverted to
standard VGA to see if that's more stable. Not uncommonly
I get a Fatal Exception 0E error, most recently when
accessing a chart in a Quattro Pro spreadsheet.

This can also be caused by a failing or underpowered Power Supply Unit.
I would also suggest installing the latest video card drivers.
Still, I would use a good Registry Cleaner such as the 'free' EasyCleaner by
Toni Arts and also download, install, update and run the following free
spyware detection programs:

AdAware

Spybot Search & Destroy

Thanx for your great suggestions.  NVidia, my video card
maker, hasn't written an upgrade for the Riva 128 card
since late 2000. Unfortunately.  Do I have other options
for drivers??  I'm thinking the card is failing, or the
drivers are clashing with newer software and .dll's.
Again, thanx!

This link has the drivers for that card. You probably already have it.

Yeah, I'm pretty sure I do, unfortunately. Reverted back
to standard VGA and the problems diminished, but it still
crashed/crashes unpredictably. Got the Toni Arts registry
cleaner. Whoa! Nice.  Hoped that might do it, but, good as
it is, it didn't get to the root of the problem.
Do you have any ideas what causes "page faults?"

Don't know about the page fault problem, but the MS Knowledge base or Google
may help.
Here is one of very many links you can find in Google regarding 'invalid
page faults':
http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=186049
Try to find the instructions on how to'completely' uninstall your Nvidia
drivers (this includes some Registry deletions) and do  a fresh install of
the lastest vid drivers again.
Sometimes even an old   .inf  file will mess things up.

For the old Creative TNT 1's it was something like:

" Ensure that you backup your current registry first by using the Export
Registry tag when you run "Regedit" from Start/Run under Windows 95/98.
Then:
Uninstall old video drivers through Add-Remove
Switch to VGA driver and reboot.
In Windows\System folder delete all files that begin with bc* and nv*.  Look
for a few bl* files too.
In Windows\Inf\Other folder delete Creative TNT INF
In Windows\Inf delete drvdata.bin and drvindx.bin
Run regedit
Look at HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software keys for:

Creative or Creative Labs - open them and delete Blaster Control keys

Blaster Control headings - delete

NVIDIA Corporation - delete

Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\OpenGLdrivers - delete NVIDIA key

Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\ControlsFolder\Display\shellex\PropertyShee
tHan dlers\BlasterControl - delete

Close regedit
Install new/old drivers"

Just kind of a guideline. You should check the instructions for your
particular vid card.

Thanx. Really appreciate it.

As for the page faults, yeah, I've been roaming thru
various DB's, including at MS, but it's very hazy. Could
be anything from hardware to software to operating system.
Thanx for all your help

Did it do this prior to upgrading, and/or did it begin right after upgrading?
