When I start up my computer, after the Windows logo the
dos prompt says 'syntax error'. Would be grateful if
someone can tell me what this means and where to find the
error or how I can clear it.

Rename your autoexec.bat to autoexec.old and see if that cures the error
message.  If so, look for a bad instruction in it or copy and paste its
contents back to this thread.  If the message continues, do the same
thing for your config.sys file.  When you are done, change the names
back to what they were.

How do I go about doing that. Do I have to work in dos
mode. I must say that I am totally ignorant about dos
modes as I understand that if I make a mistake while doing
that it can render my computer inoperable. Your further
guidance will be appreciated. Thanks.

Is your computer not booting into Windows?  If it is not, hold down the
ctrl key right after the memory count appears on the boot screen.  That
should get you to the startup menu and you can select safe mode.  Once
booted in safe mode, rename the file in Windows Explorer.

It does boot to Windows. I am just wondering why each time
I boot, this "syntax error" message pops up before the
Windows.

That is what we are trying to find out by renaming the files (one at a
time) and then rebooting to see if the message quits.  Once you know
where it is coming from, then we can try to fix it.

I have changed the file name as suggested.  It is still
doing the same thing i.e. saying "syntax error" before
windows is booted.  What shall I do next?

Did you change both file names?
