I have Win 98 and computer is beginning to freeze a lot.
Nothing helps, such as cont alt del, etc.  Have to just
shut power off and wait for scan disk when it restarts.  I
have done scan disk, defrag, cleared temp files. but it
keeps freezing up.  Any ideas?

Seemingly random freeze-ups are usually hardware related.  Suspect bad
memory modules, a bad power supply, or a bad cooling fan somewhere in the
system.  Enlist the assistance of someone skilled at hardware
troubleshooting if you yourself are not.

Have you tested your memory?
http://oca.microsoft.com/en/windiag.asp

How large is your hard disk and how much free space? In Windows Explorer
right click on your C drive and select Properties. How much ram memory?

Download Adaware from http://www.lavasoftusa.com/support/download/ and use it to remove parasites.

A known problem with Windows 98 occurs if the My Documents folder is stuffed full of folders ( not files ). Do you have more than 100 folders and sub-folders in the My Documents folder? Easiest way to check is to right click the My Documents folder in Windows Explorer and select Properties.

The solution is to reduce the number of Folders and Sub-Folders to below 100. Also place your files in another folder off the C drive -call it Myfiles. The point is not to stores files in a "Special folder", which is what My Documents is!

What is the situation regarding System Resources? Use Resource Meter to check System Resources  to see whether you are running low on User Resources or  GDI Resources. To run Resource Meter go to Start, Programs, Accessories, System Tools, Resource Meter. If it is not there install by selecting Start, Settings, Control Panel, Add / Remove Programs, Windows Set Up, double click System Tools and place a check before Resource Meter and click OK.

What programmes are running in the background. Anything like Cleansweep or Crashguard. Any McAfee products? Are you using Findfast, part of Microsoft Office?
