turn off screen saver
hit control alt delte and shut down all apps except for explorer

restart the computer and press the f8 key and a menu will pop up and
you can boot into safe mode. Answer yes to all the questions, do the
defrag and then reboot, the computer will come in regular mode.
The other thing is to change the options to NOT reorganize the
directories. It is set by starting defrag, quickly stopping it and
then choose "select drive", then "settings".
