Memory not enough to defrag

When I go to defrag I get the message that there's not
enough memory.
I checked and there's lots of memory left.
While trying to run Quick Books I got the same message
and to shut down everything. (I've worked w/this program
almost everyday and never gotten an error message.)
Closing everything didn't work and I ended up shutting
the computer down and rebooting. Quick Books ran fine
after that.
What would be causing the memory message? Also, this
computer is not online. It's just for book work.
Thanks for any help you may be able to give.

Please give some information about your hard disk, it's size and whether it has been partitioned. A report based on what follows would help.

Restart in Ms-Dos mode and type cd\ and press the ENTER key. At the C:
prompt type chkdsk and press ENTER. Copy the information down and post the
details in a further message. To restart Windows type either Exit or Win and
press the ENTER key.

Hope this helps.
