Replaced motherboard & cpu and hard drive. I did a clean install of W98SE
with all MS updates. System runs fine, but when I shut down the computer it
will restart after 3 seconds. Only way to shut it down is by using the
switch on the power supply before it has a chance to restart.. Any ideas?
Thanks in advance.

Check your BIOS settings.

Also, run MSCONFIG and click on the advanced button.  Put a checkmark in the
box for "Disable Fast Shutdown"

Don't have that option in msconfig. Tried to correct it through the BIOS,
but no luck.

The Disable fast shutdown option is in the Advanced button of the General
tab in MSConfig.

Jeff,
Don't have that option. Used to, but it went away when I installed MS
shutdown patch 4756us8.exe

<sigh>  That patch is usually saved for the last resort.

try disabling the usb controller in bios, install your new new piece of hardware and then enable the usb controller again. I have just replaced my mobo and had this problem. This was the only way I found to solve it. Best of luck.
