I'm another who can't get scandisk to work tho defrag works just fine
if I'm careful.

I've tried safe mode, no joy

I tried running it in DOS and got the error message
"
There is not enough free conventional memory to perform a surface
scan.

You may need to remark (REM) some device drivers from your CONFIG.SYS
file. Or, in your CONFIG.SYS file you made need to load the EMM386.EXE
driver to load your other device drivers into Upper Memory Blocks
using DEVICEHIGH= statements"

Thing is I've looked at config.sys and there doesn't seem to be
anything else I can do there:

It reads:

DEVICE=C:\WINDOWS\HIMEM.SYS
DEVICE=C:\WINDOWS\EMM386.EXE
REM [Header]

REM [CD-ROM Drive]
REM DEVICE=C:\CDROM\HIT-DVD.SYS /D:MSCD001
REM DEVICE=C:\CDROM\ATAPI_CD.SYS /D:MSCD001 /PIO

REM [Miscellaneous]

REM [Display]

DEVICEHIGH=c:\windows\setver.exe
DEVICEHIGH=c:\windows\COMMAND\display.sys con=(ega,,1)
Country=044,850,c:\windows\COMMAND\country.sys
[COMMON]
DEVICEHIGH=C:\DELL\RTC.CLK +R
REM DEVICEHIGH=C:\WINDOWS\COMMAND\DRVSPACE.SYS /MOVE

Anybody got any other ideas?

Regards and TIA

Tell you what Jess try this just once!
Rename the autoexec.bat file to autoexec.jes
rename the config.sys file to config.jes
Then reboot the computer, should come up just fine. Make sure
everything works, yes including the scan disk. Win98 loads most of
what you already load all by itself EVERY time! You are double loading
alot of things!
If the computer does not work just reverse the process and you are no
worse off than you are now.

How large is your hard disk?

Restart in Ms-Dos mode and type cd\ and press the ENTER key. At the C:
prompt type chkdsk and press ENTER. Copy the information down and post the
details in a further message. To restart Windows type either Exit or Win and
press the ENTER key.

Hope this helps.
