Defrag - Is it worth it?

Does anyone have any reliable data about what kind of
performance gains can be had by running Defrag?

How about plain, old, non-scientific, personal
observations? Anyone actually observed his/her system
speed up considerably after running Defrag?

Just curious - seems like driving a thumb tack with a
sledge hammer to me...

It doesn't cost anything but some time to run. I schedule it to run weekly
on my home machine when I normally wouldn't be using the computer. I would
say the increase in performance can be quite high if you haven't done it for
a long time. One of the things it does is optimize the 50 most used programs
(check out the file OPTLOG.TXT in your C:\WINDOWS\APPLOG directory to see
what they are.

Hello,
interesting !

My list of "Programs Eligible for Optimization:" is empty ...
And my list of "Programs Ineligible for Optimization" contains a lot of
frequently used programs, for example, Winword ; with the code U (means :
not used for more than 90 days...?? ?? ?? ??)

How is this possible  ?

The file is updated when you do a defrag. Check the settings button in
Defrag to ensure you have it configured to "Rearrange files so my programs
start faster". Also Taskmon.exe must be running as this keeps track of
which programs you have been using. Note that if this option is on Defrag
may stay at 10% for a long time. Finally the Windows ME defrag works with
Windows 98 and is significantly faster:

Easy test.  Just don't use defrag for the better of a one (1) year and
measure the difference on this computer.  No learning like testing
this for yourself.

Good luck with test and perhaps you could post your results in early
2005?
