Shut Down Problems

I just installed a new PCI Multimedia Device. It's called
the Real Magic Hollywood Plus. It allows me to play DVDs
back on my computer screen. After I installed this card, I
started to have problems with my computer.

When I go to Start, Shut Down, and then click "Shut Down
the Computer" and click yes, the computer will not shut
down, instead it will restart.

I have tried various diagnostic steps, please read them
before you respond to this message.

1. I have booted up in Safe Mode, and disabled the card.
When I am in safe mode, of course the computer shuts down
because of the default settings and such. When I restart
the computer in normal mode, everything works fine, and I
am able to shut down the computer. Something is probably
wrong with the hardware settings,  I thought, so here is
what I did next.

2. Take note that the card is now re-enabled. I went into
device manager, and looked under the resources tab, and to
my surprise it was listing "no conflicts." That is not
making since, because there has to be a conflict because
something is telling the computer to restart instead of
shut down.

3. I boot up into Safe Mode, and change some device
settings. I changed the interrupt request to 04 instead of
10, and the memory usage settings to something different.
Take not that there are no interferences. When I boot up
into normal mode, the system will shut down, but the DVD
card will not play DVDs as it should. It will play about
the first minute of the DVD and then freeze. The computer
shuts down as it should in normal mode, but now the DVD
card does not work. Take note that I adjusted the settings
MANUALLY while in safe mode.

4. I boot up into Safe Mode, and go into the device
manager, and check the box that says "Use Automatic
Settings." I shut down the computer, and restart it again.
Now the DVD card will play DVDs, but I am now back where I
started, I cannot shut down the computer, instead it will
restart.

This is a tough one, it even has our technology department
confused. I am about to just give up and live with the
problem. Someone please help me.

Run msconfig.exe, general tab, advanced button.  Mark the "Disable fast
shutdown" box because it can cause shutdown to work too fast and a
reboot results.  If the entry does not exist or if it is already marked,
MVP Jim Eshelman has general troubleshooting procedures for W95/98/98SE
shutdown problems at http://www.aumha.org/a/shutdown.htm and procedures
for W98SE in particular at  http://www.aumha.org/a/shtdwnse.htm

Sorry, I already tried that, and to no avail. Also, please
note that disabling the device makes the system work
again. Also note that when I change the settings to manual
configuration (Interrupt Request, Memory Usage, etc.) the
computer will shut down, but will not play DVDs. Thanks
for your quick response. Come back in 24 hours for a
followup response.

Thank you.

OK. I know that, but I want to the computer to work
whether or not the card is enabled. Do you have any
suggestions?

I would be talking to the manufacturer.  DOesn't sound like a Windows
problem.
