I am unable to scan disk and defragment due to s message
that I believe is "writing to disk" during the process.  I
would very much appreciate your help in locating whatever
is "writing" and modifying, or are there any other options
for scanning/defragmenting?  Our system is extremely slow
and we have multiple crashes.  Thanks!!  Bette

run them in "safe" mode

After being targeted with gigabytes of trash by the "SWEN" worm, I have
concluded we must conceal our e-mail address.  Our true address is the
mirror image of what you see before the "@" symbol.  It's a shame such
steps are necessary.          ...Charlie

You should not Defrag an unhealthy system.
If you are getting multiple crashes, post back with the exact error messages, and when they are occurring.  If you get an "illegal operation" error message, click the "Details" button, and post back with the exact details word for word, up to but not including the memory registers.

Update your anti-virus app and then run a full-system virus scan.

Use CWShredder, the removal tool, available here:

In addition, install Ad-Aware 6 free edition, start it, click its 'Check for Updates' link in the app to install updates, then use it to scan your system, and remove what it finds.

Install, update and run SpyBot Search & Destroy, scan your system, and then remove the items in RED only.

>Make sure you have your virus protection disable while
you do the scan also make sure you don't have screensaver
set up or you monitor on a power managment.  Because
windows somehow recognized that as always working
