USB notification missing

On one of my 98SE systems, I am not getting the notification that a USB
device is plugged in and there is no icon in the systray, therefore I do not
have the ability to safely remove it. What do I need to do to get this on my
system? I have that ability on all the XP systems and my 98SE laptop, but
this one system has never had it. Is it a matter of adding something to the
registry?  Please, any help would be greatly appreciated.

Does the USB controller appear as a device in Device Manager, and is it
reported as operating OK?

If it doesn't appear then you may need to enable it in BIOS setup - many
machines of W98 vintage were delivered with USB available but not enabled.
You will then need to install drivers for the USB controller - they are
probably part of the motherboard driver set.

The devices do appear in Device Manager and they all work properly. I just
don't get the icon in the systray and the ability to click on it to safely
remove the device.  USB is enables in the BIOS.

What devices are you having the problem with?  Many devices do not need to
be removed safely - they can be unplugged without warning.

I'm  referring to my flash drives and my external hard drive. I never
thought about it before on this computer, however I did get a corrupted
flash drive and I believe it must be because it was not "safely"
disconnected from the computer.

Flash drives and an external HD should appear in the tray, as the system
needs to ensure that the device is not in use before it is disconnected.

Are you sure that the devices you are using are designed for Windows 98?

It is the responsibility of the device driver to tell Windows that it is the
type of device that needs a systray notification. When the device is
connected, check its properties in device manager. It should be identified
as a mass storage device.  The only reference I can find to a similar
problem suggests using different drivers, so you could check with the
manufacturer to see if a driver upgrade is available.

They all work on my other 98 computer. But I also just learned that they do
not work on my husband's new XP laptop. He says he never gets the
notification there. So, to sum up, the devices appear on one 98 and one XP
system, and not on one 98 and one XP system. This is getting frustrating. :)

What was the result of looking at the devices in Device Manager?  Can you
see differences in the entries between the machines that do work and those
that don't?  Are they recorded as removable mass storage devices?  Did the
manufacturer have updated drivers available?

Everything shows up fine in device manager. I just don't get the little icon
in the systray.

This is the best site I know for USB information, although I can't see
anything that refers to your problem.

Thank you, but I noticed this problem occurs in one of my XP laptops too!
This is very strange.

The system tray icon you're referring to works with USB and Firewire
enclosure devices like a HD or DVD/DVD writer.  Such did not appear on my
system until I added a Firewire connected HD.  Whereas when the USB devices
had connected prior to that were a mouse, and printer with no such icon.
Does the PC you're referring to have such removable enclosure devices?

I'm referring to my flash drives and external hard drive. I only thought
about this problem when some info on a flash drive got corrupted and I
believe it is because I didn't "safely" disconnect it.

Am thinking one of two things happened.  One is that the file that does the
job. hotplug.dll, got trashed somehow.  Or the registry lost when and how to
use hotplug.dll file.  MS has an update for this file as part of an update
package as well  Try restoring this file.  There is a problem with a few
Dell models with RAID controllers that's documented but no fix is noted, and
there is a failure message in that case.

A simple solution is to update to the latest version of hotplug.dll from MS.
Its part of a Firewire update from MS for 98SE only.  It won't hurt your PC
if you don't have Firewire.

Let us know if it works or not.

Thanks. I'll give it a try this afternoon and let you know how it works.

Have you been able to get the "safely remove hardware" icon to
appear, I have the same problems with Windows ME.
Geo - 26 May 2005 07:45 GMT
I do have the same problem. I use 2 usb devices (an external CDRW and a flash
drive). System recognizes both devices and everything works fine.

The problem is that I cannot safely remove them. (I have to shutdown before
unpluging).
The only problem is the missing taskbar icon.
Everything else seems to be OK.
Any ideas?
Alan Edwards - 26 May 2005 08:30 GMT
What same problem?
I have never had a taskbar icon with Win98 SE for any USB drives and
have no problem if I wait a few seconds after closing any of their
windows down before removing the drive.
What happens with you?

The problem is excactly what I tried to describe. For some reason, one day I
connected my USB device and the safely remove hardware icon did nor appeared
in the taskbar. When I had to disconnect the usb device (an Iomega flash
drive) I had no other option but to simply plug it off (without safely
removing it as I used to do).
When I do that, pc freezes and I have to restart.

(Note : Rightclicking on the drive icon in My Computer and clicking on Eject
option does not help.)

The Eject option sounds like it should work, but it simply sends an eject
command to the device. Some devices can eject their media, some can't. It is
not associated with disconnecting the device from Windows. I would love to
see the disconnect option on the right-click menu (and I guess that would
also be a way around your problem).
