Win98SE
Firefox 1.0.4
Opera 8.0

Above are two examples of apparently differently reacting programs under
Win98SE using the START command.

Firefox will start it's browser screen from a DOS window using the command:
"Start firefox" .

Opera will not.  But requires a complete statement of PATH.

The main Executables for both reside in "Program Files"

Both have entries under "c:\windows\application data" the firefox entry
there is considerably more extensive, and the Opera entry is an .ini file.

Both exist in "C:\windows\Desktop"

Why does one start pathless, and the other does not?

jrp

(Firefox has a branched entry under "Mozilla" under "Application Data" and
it's main executable is under "Program Files" )

Have a look in the Registry.
(Start-Run-Regedit)
Navigate down to
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\App Paths
I don't have either application but I suspect Firefox has an entry
there and Opera does not.

Excellent and rapid answer Alan.  I looked and you are correct.  And if
there was an actual need, I could create a key and values for Opera that is
a mimic of the firefox key/values.

(I noticed this when i was batching these two)
