We need the complete *verbatim* text of the error message on the blue
screen.

There are tens of thousands (at least) of different possible blue
screen errors in Windows 98 and most of these have different causes
and therefore different cures.

ok Ron
here are two different error messages that I get
  (1) "an exception 0E has occured at 0028:C004D8c5 in Vxd  Vfat(01) +
0000B8ED"

  (2) "a fatal exception 0E has occured at 0028:C181DDE0 in VXD APIX(03)+
00000E80"

Did the error message contain further information referring to
VOLTRACK.VXD, specifically "This was called from 0028:C128CCF0 in VxD
voltrack(04) + 00000430."?

If so then here is a suggestion from MVP Glen Ventura (Glee) regarding
the same error message:

****
See if extracting a new copy of voltrack.vxd helps.
Use the "Extract one file" option of System File Checker (SFC) to
extract
voltrack.vxd from the Windows CD (or from the .cab file location on
your hard
drive), to the C:\Windows\System\iosubsys folder, then reboot.

Using SFC to extract one file:

>00000E80"

There are numerous reports of similar errors involving APIX.VXD on
computers with USB camera or USB memory stick drivers installed.  Do
you have any such devices on your machine?  One fix involved updating
Roxio Easy CD-Creator.

Hope this is of some assistance.

Good luck

I have been trying to get a solution to this same problem and my Google
searching led me here. The error I am getting is:

An exception 0E occurred at 0028:C0048BA0 in VxD VFAT(01). This was
called from 0028:C183D4A0 in VxD voltrack(04)

This error occurs when I try to eject a CD from the LITE-ON cd writer
but if I leave the CD in the drive the system behaves fine. If I rename
voltrack.vxd to voltrack.old and reboot again, the system runs fine
except that the CD writer then doesn't read any discs because it says
'A device attached to the system is not functioning'.

I tried replacing voltrack.vxd with the original from the .CAB files,
but the blue screen returns. Any other suggestions? Thanks.
