Over the past few days the following 2 different scenarios occur on my
Gateway desktop running Win98SE.

(1) While in IE6, the mouse will "freeze" for about 30 seconds and then be
fine.  About 10 minutes later the same thing happens. About 5-10 minutes
later is completely freezes. The system is not hung because I can use the
keyboard to move about. Then, the keyboard freezes and I have to power off.

(2) While in IE6, the mouse will "freeze" for about 30 seconds and then be
fine.  About 10 minutes later the same thing happens. Then, as I move the
mouse, windows start opening up, resizing, status bar reorients itself,
windows cascade, windows tile, etc etc. BIZZARE-O!!

I have run a complete virus check (Norton 2005) with no problems found; I
have run SpyBot and removed all the problems; I have plenty of disk space &
memory for my use; I have swapped my mouse.

ANY IDEAS OF WHAT TO CHECK OR DO WOULD BE APPRECIATED!!

I did not need an answer for this particular problem. I had posted a question
about Access 2000 archiving to a log in a database--

Okay... www.lavasoft.de and download AdAware. Update both that and Spybot.
Reboot and press F8 and enter safe mode. Then try your scan again. As you're
using 98 this isn't all useful to you - you can't use the Microsoft
AntiSpyware beta for instance and the safe mode for you is already safe mode
without networking but here's some other tools you can use to check. Again,
do your scan in safe mode. You mentioned having problems and cleaning them
and while the application may indeed say it has cleaned them it's hard to
kill a malware process that's running and most malware will not be running
in safe mode which makes the scanning and cleaning more effective.

Please ignore the parts about the CA eTrust as the trial (year long) is only
for XP users if I recall correctly and the part about safe mode without
networking isn't important to you as you're using 98.

Try checking the settings on your Task Scheduler.  Are they set to check for
updates every 5 or 10 minutes?   I noticed this on my computer and am about
to change them to check once a day instead of every five minutes.  Both
McAfee and Windows Update are set for every five minutes 24hrs a day.
Windows Update does a scan on your computer each time also.
