Sluggish win98

I have recently re-installed Win98 followed by drivers, software etc. The
computer was running superbly until installation of a particular driver.
Since then, boot up and close down have become very slow. Removing the
offending driver/programme did not solve the problem.

Can I retrace my steps and re-install previous config or other system files
prior to this step or are there any other fixes for this sort of problem?
Many thanks

OK, I'll try it this way:
ok, i'LL TRY IT THIS WAY.  yOU SAID:"The
computer was running superbly until installation of a particular driver.
You must know which driver that was.  So again which driver was it.

It was more of a programme I think than a driver - the programme is called
'memory bar' which I installed to go with a memory stick external drive -
when prompted for a driver - I directed the computer to my CD rom but it
failed to locate a suitable driver for win 98. I had also installed Norton
antivirus (not yet activated) but I think I had rebooted several times since
installing Norton and there had been no problem prior to installing memory
bar. Now the computer takes about 1 minute to close down whereas before it
had taken about 5 seconds.

Try the following steps to check out exactly what is causing your
startup delay:

1.  Create a bootlog.txt file when you start up the computer.  Turn it
one and press the Ctrl key just as soon as the first information of
any kind shows on the screen.  Hold it down until the Windows Startup
menu appears and select the option to create a bootlog file.

2.  When the computer has finished booting up (or prior to creating
the bootlog if your prefer) download the free bootlog analyzer program
from http://dspace.dial.pipex.com/town/terrace/pk29/ and run it to
check out the bootlog file you just created.  Select the "show delays"
option in the program to list those startup events that took excessive
time.

That information will help you to better diagnose what is slowing
things down.  Post the delay information back here if you need help
with that.

Good luck

Thanks to all for replies. Will get back to you when I've had time to try the
things you suggest. Best wishes WB

Hi, there
I have discovered that it is Norton antivirus that is slowing the system
down. When I uninstalled Norton, the performance was very fast again on boot
up and shut down. Once re-installed, the problem returned. Even when I tell
it not to run Norton on start up, the performance is still much slower. On
this computer, I only occasionally use the internet.  Is there any way, I can
completely disable the Norton, except for when I decide I want to run it?
Many thanks

You could probably do this by turning off all of the Norton related
items in MSCONFIG.  But then you would have to turn them all back on
again and reboot the computer before you went online and that could be
a real p.i.t.a.

My suggestion would be to ditch Norton and use a different antivirus
that does not load down your system so heavily.

Alternative antivirus programs include:
AVG (free for personal use) http://www.grisoft.com  click on the Site
Map link in the left side column and then on the AVG Free Edition
link.
Avast (free for personal use) http://avast.com
eTrust http://my-etrust.com
PC-cillin http://trendmicro.com

There are a number of others.

Good luck

Go into the Norton screen and do Options, Antivirus  etc and deselect the
programs you don't want running at startup, esp  Auto-Protect and some Internet
and backup options.
