Sound has stopped working

Can anyone suggest some steps I can take to solve the following problem?
A few days ago I was surfing and the sound function for all programs, the
internet and all keyboard/Windows sounds just stopped working.  This has
happened before and a reboot has typically solved the problem.  No luck this
time.

For some reason, my Windows troubleshooters are not working (won't display
when you click NEXT after selecting the appropriate Trouble shooter) -- they
should be available somewhere on the net, shouldn't they?

I'm a beginner at fixing these kinds of things by myself but before I take
it in I would like to try going through some steps on my own.  I'm running a
Norton 2005 virus scan now but am not hopeful it will find anything.

Suggestions/Ideas?
Thank you

Sorry no one answered you for so long.  I have not been in this group in a while.
Have you tried reinstalling your audio drivers?  What happens when you try to play a
sound, such as a .wav file such as are used as Windows system sounds?  Can you play
a music CD, or an mp3 or MIDI file?

There are two different fixes for the Troubleshooters problem, depending on the
Windows updates you have installed.

The original fix for the older update was this:
First, click Start> Settings> Folder Options> View tab, and click to enable "Show
All Files" and click OK.
Click Start> Find> File or Folders, and search the C:\ drive for a file named
Tshoot.inf...it should be found in the \Windows\Inf folder.
Right-click Tshoot.inf and click Install on the menu that appears.

If the latest cumulative patch for Internet Explorer is installed, there is only a
workaround.  First, run the original fix above, then see here:
