My computer boots to the screen that you would get if you hit the control key
on startup ie- normal, command prompt, safe mode etc. choices with the Normal
startup selected. If I let it stay there and wait for the 30 sec. countdown,
it will continue it's boot into windows. This drives me nuts! (I cannot
choose safe mode from this screen - it freezes upon trying to boot into safe
mode. I can boot into safe mode only by command prompt). Am I missing/have
a damaged file that auto-boots into windows? Why do I get the choices screen
instead of just loading windows? Can anyone help with this? Thanks! No
viruses, adware/spyware - checks clean.

In the C:\ root directory, there is either a file called "msdos.sys" or
"winboot.ini".
Edit the file. You may have to change the attribute of the file...remove
read-only.
Open the file. Under the Options heading, add or change the following lines
BootMenu=0
BootMenuDelay=0
That should solve the problem.

You could always press <Enter> instead of waiting for 30 seconds.

Personally, I think it is handy to have but to get rid of it...
Start > Run
MSCONFIG
General tab
Advanced
Untick "Enable Startup Menu"
