I have a Sony PCG-707 with 128 mb RAM and 4gig HD with 1.4 G free.
Generally, about 85% of memory is free. Running WIN98 SE. Until recently, I
could browse shared files on my desktop and print through a home network,
which is about all I need the laptop for. Now, every time I try to browse a
shared file or print, I get the above message. I didn't change anything that
I know of other than retrieve Windows Updates. Ideas?
Here is a possibility but don't be thrown off because the error messages are
not exactly the same:
Antivirus Software May Cause Event ID 2011

Others with your exact error message have successfully used the fix
described in this article.

Ron,
On the Sony Laptop, I don't have any antivirus software running. It
connects through a wireless router to a Windows XP Professional machine that
does have Norton. I read the article and looked for the registry values on
the 98 machine and didn't find them. I completely shut off Norton on the XP
machine and tried to read a shared folder on it from the Sony and got the
same message. The article you reference indicates that the registry changes
don't apply to a 98 system. Are you saying that I should make them on the 98
machine where I'm getting the error or on the XP machine it is networked to?
Thanks.

I saw other cases where the registry entries apparently did exist on W98
machines; however, it also appeared like the AV programs were involved with
the entries. Since you don't have AV on the W98 machine, the article I
referenced will not apply in your situation. Sorry the lead didn't pan out.
