System Memory upgrade

I am running a gigabyte motherboard which has its bios and drivers all updated
The OS is 98se and all is well with 512MB of memory installed

When I increase the memory up to 1GB by an extra 512 stick or by pulling the
lot and inserting a 1GB stick the system hangs

The bios reports the amount of memory on boot correctly

However when I finaly get the system to boot nothing works properly because
windows has disabled virtual memory

On one occasion I got a dos message which said that windows could not
continue loading due to insufficient memory. Strange since I had actually
doubled the memory.

Hardware suppliers have run out of options and seem to think that there are
no problems with the equipment.

Is it possible that I have a windows problem and if so how might I over come
this ?

How chuffed am I, finaly ive got a machine that goes at a decent speed.

If only I could have known it was that simple it would have saved weeks of
sending suspect memory sticks back to my very patient supplier

THANK YOU  VERY MUCH

Hi,
I have a spare 256 Ram stick but have been wary about putting it in
alongside my existing 512 due to issues I've read in other groups.
You make it seem easy so I'll ask you if there is any particular method.
1)Should the change be made to sys.ini before or after Ram is put in?
2)Does the new text go directly under the [vcache] (mine has nothing under
  it at the moment)

cheers

I made the change to the [vcache] before I inserted the memory and booted
the machine with its original memory to check all was well.
Mine was blank underneath the heading as well so I input the new line using
the same spacing as per other entries in the system.ini file

I then inserted the 1GB stick and rebooted. Everything was fine.

It is worth mentioning however that my machine still wont wok with the 1GB
and original 512 stick inserted together even though the motherboard can
support upto 2GB. I think this may be because the two sticks of memory are
not matched which I have read can cause problems in some systems. My 2 sticks
were the same spec except different manufacturers and memory size.

THis may effect you if the sticks are different.

Thanks Leigh, is much appreciated.
The biz about the sticks being mis-matched is a pain in the proverbial,
why dont these flippin' manufacturers have universal standards.
(I take that back, I Know why, ti's the all important $$$)

Anyhow, I will follow your lead, I believe it is the way I would
have gone too.
cheers

It is not the motherboard that is the problem, nor probably even the mismatched
memory sticks.
It is rare when Win98 will work properly with more than 1.5 GB of ram.
There is another simple tweak that may allow you to use the whole 1.5GB of ram,
but I can't remember what it is at this time.
However, do you really need more than 1GB for your programs?
To find out, use System Monitor (found under System Tools) and pick out the
"swapfile in use" selection and then let it record while you run your most
memory intensive programs for a half=hour or so and then check it. If it is much
above 20MB , then more ram may just help. If it is less, then more ram most
likely will not give you a noticeable improvement.
If you do a search in this newsgroup, you will find out more info on using 1.5GB
of ram in Win98.
Enjoy your new ram.
PS: If you want to give away your 512 stick, post back.  :-)

Add the line in system.ini BEFORE you add the memory!

As for the entry under vcache....put all of the following....which will also
help with system performance

[vcache]
MaxFileCache=512000
ChunkSize=4096
NameCache=6144
DirectoryCache=128
PathCache=128

Signature

All problems have a simple solution!  The more complex the solution, the
more ludicrous the analogy!
