win98se..

had an electrical storm knocked out my video card and modem. Got the system
back up and running but Win98 is really messed up.
Shows all kinds of error msg, can't even reinstall antivirus (needs files).
Ran system checker, direct x and Reg cleaning program. Have missing files,
unregistered files and reg is showing 14 entries that are suspect.

Tried to reinstall win98se off my original OEM cd and won't work.
Can't figure out how to uninstall to reinstall....

Thinking about reformatting HD but not sure IF I need to do that and/or if
that will fix problem's'..

Suggestsions please,

Just put the CD in your drive and reboot the computer. It should come up
with a CD boot menu. I've done it about 3 times. You may first want to boot
off the CD and go to the command prompt and do "format c:". Then do the
reinstall.

So you're saying to reformat the HD?
I'm trying not to do that.
When I try and reinstall WIN98se, it lock up....

(Omitted by all posters so far . . . )
After an electric storm and power outage, do
DOS SCANDISK to confirm the FAT has not
been damaged.  If your hard drive cannot be
confirmed in good condition, replace it now
(and leave until later repair of the old drive or
its reconfiguration as a mirror drive etc.)
Before reinstalling Win98
delete all nonessential data,
DELTREE C:\Recyc*.* and similarly for D, E, etc.

This is to be expected after an electrical storm.

You do not uninstall first:  just run SETUP.EXE
from the CD's root directory.

Prepare beforehand by checking you have recorded
the product ID, backed up data files etc.
Read http://home.satx.rr.com/badour/html/w98_restore.html
before you delete or overwrite anything.

First thing is to go into the Registry and find your ProductKey. Copy it down on
paper and put it where it is not likely to be lost.
You will need this Key to install Win98 if you ever have to do it from scratch.

"If the system is working in either safe or normal mode:

Open regedit.exe to this key and look in the right pane for the entry
ProductKey:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion

the system is not working, start the computer with a floppy startup disk.

At the A: prompt, type:  C:\Windows\Command\Find /N "ProductKey"
C:\Windows\System.dat
(Note:  ProductKey must be typed in upper and lower case letters as shown
and there is a space after:  "Find"     after:  "/N"    and after:
"ProductKey" "

The above is quoted from a post by Ron Badour.

If you can boot to the 'command prompt only' in DOS (usually by tapping the
ctrl,F8 or F5 key to get to the Startup Menu), change to your CD drive letter,
may be one higher or lower than it is in Windows. Once you find it, just type
setup.exe as someone else suggested.

Whoops, Don Phillipson already gave you the link explaining this.

I can open/start WIN in both Safe and Normal.
I do get an error msg on startup concerning VdX Dynamic Link problem. I
click YES and WIN goes ahead and opens.
The problem is the system is VERY unstable.
Everytime I run Scandisk, etc. I get missing/corrupted chains.
I also notice that several files are showing as corrupted.
That's the reason for reinstalling WIN instead of reformatting.
Hoping that a reinstall would do it. I have the original win98se cd with
key, etc.
It's just that I keep getting a msg that states I have WIN already installed
and it's doesn't like the OEM version of Win to install over itself.

Sounds to me like your hard drive is dying. I'd download and run a
floppy-based diagnostic for your HD. Best to get the diagnostic tools from
the drive's manufacturer. To determine the make/model of the HD, use Everest
Home Edition from www.lavalys.com

From a Ron Badour article:
"4.  You should install the system from DOS--if you need help on this, see the
How To article:  W98 RESTORE DISK AND INSTALLATION PROCEDURES.  When you are
ready to start, boot with the floppy start up disk and W98 CD inserted.  At the
A: prompt, type:  C:    and hit enter.  At the C: prompt, type:  CD Windows
and hit enter.  Rename the win.com and winver.exe files by typing:  ren win.com
win.old    and hit enter. Do the same for Winver.exe.  Refer to the installation
procedures for the next installation step."
Note: this is just an excerpt.
For some warnings and more info, check it out at:
http://home.satx.rr.com/badour/html/upgrade.html

Remember, if you do get it going, install it in the same directory where Windows
is alread installed, and NOT in the directory suggested by windows (use
C:\Windows   and NOT  C:\Windows.000).
