Can't rename or delete a file - File system error (1026)

I was attempting to backup my Windows98 Favorites onto a floppy, when I got
this error message:

"Cannot copy (file name) : Cannot find the specified file. Make sure you
specify the correct path and file name."

The named file was without a link icon (the blue "e" with the arrow), which
indicated to me that it lacked its file association. So I attempted to add
the .URL extension. I got the following error message:

"Cannot rename file. File system error (1026)."

So I attempted to just delete the file. I got the following error message:

"Cannot delete file. File system error (1026)."

Now what? Until I fix "File system error (1026)," I am unable to do a backup
of this folder.

Thanks for any help.

thomas,

Please don't multi-post your questions. If you really think more than one
newsgroup can help, address the initial post to all the appropriate NGs (no
more than a few, please). That way, when we read it in one group, and it
gets marked read, it gets marked read everywhere.

For what it's worth, you aren't likely to find any better answer to your
question than in the General Discussion group, provided you give us a chance
to fully understand your problem.

How do I address an "initial post to all the appropriate NGs" ?

Thanks,

thomas

In the Header section labeled "Newsgroups", click on that label and you'll
be offered a dialogue that allows you to address to any number of NGs (but,
again, please keep it to a minimum.)

I've answered again in your other thread, and I still suggest that you try
the suggestions in that KB article (one you already know about), regardless
of the fact that your "cause" doesn't seem to match.

Or follow Alan's advice and skip it for now. It's not doing anything else to
your system.

You are probably overloading the floppy if you are putting files
directly in the root drive.
A floppy only hold 224 entries in the root and long filenames will
take 3 or more entries.

If you want to backup favorites, you only need one file.
Use IE-File-Export and create a single html file.

As a test, I even attempted to copy (to a floppy) the single sub-folder
within Favorites that contains this "non-deletable" file - only 26 files in
the folder. Same error message. I even tried moving the weird file out of
the
folder. Same error message.

Thanks for the backup tip. I didn't know about using an HTML file for
backing up Favorites onto a floppy. All my links now fit nicely in one HTML
file and don't take up nearly the space that copying the Favorites folder
does.

But is there a way to organize my Favorites sub-folders alphabetically in
this HTML file? I have lots of sub folders, and they appear completely
randomly in the HTML file.

Actually, the reason I put my Favorites on a floppy isn't just to back them
up. I carry them with me when I travel.

Thanks again.

Can you move the whole folder (temporarily)?

Boot to the command prompt (StartUp Menu) find the file and then either rename
it or delete it.
Usually you can get there by tapping the ctrl key continuously during initial
bootup.

I would suggest that you rename it (badtest.txt or your choice). Remember the
original name though.

Buffalo,

Renaming the file while using MS-DOS fixed the corrupt file in "Favorites."
Everything is OK now. (I did have a bit of a mental exercise remembering how
to use DOS :-)

Thanks for your help. And thanks everybody else too. I learned a couple
things in the process.
