When using Ctrl-Alt-Del I get the 'Close Program' dialogue box.  I can
'End Task', 'Shut Down' or 'Cancel', but if I use the 'x' in the right
hand corner to close the dialogue box the system hangs, and I need to do
a hard reboot (system reset).  Has anyone come across this problem?

I've tried to see if there is a corrupt program I can replace, but on
this OS (original Win98) there is no taskmgr.exe to be found.  Of course
I try to remember not to select 'Close' but when I forget I'm cooked.
Any help would be appreciated.  Thanks,

I don't have Win98 FE, but in Win98SE, there is no X in the upper right corner to
close the "Close Program" box....you *must* use one of the three buttons: End task,
Shut Down, or Cancel.

Thanks for taking the time to check it out.  I can't say if it recently
started behaving this way, or if it's been like this since day 1.

I don't have a Win98FE system available anywhere, to check, but it sounds odd, and I
wonder if there is some third-party app that has hooked to the Close Program box and
causing the trouble.  An old McAfee utility used to do that....Oil Change or one of
those ilk, similar to Norton Crashguard.  Do you have anything like that on the
system?  If so, uninstall it.

None of the third-party apps.  I run Spybot and Ad-Aware regularly, and
only have Norton Anti-virus installed.  My other systems have similar
setup and the X close works fine.  I'll have to live with it or 'trip'
over a fix by accident.  Thanks again for your time and effort.
