Disk Defragmenter won't work

The other day I did a disk cleanup then a manual search for .tmp files
trying to make some room on my HD. I deleted all the .tmp files and emptied
the recycle bin.

Now Disk Defragmenter has stopped working. Or I should say it starts but
never gets past 0%. The HD is quite busy and it makes the distinctive sound
of a disk defrag but that's all it does. It ran all night, was still running
this morning and still showed 0%.

Could one of those temporary files somehow been critical to Disk
Defragmenter? Does that even make sense? It's the only "out of the ordinary"
thing I did prior to it stopping to function. Everything else on the PC
seems to be ok.

Thanks!

DEFRAG needs plenty of empty space in order to
move large files on the hard drive.  Your Recycled Bin
probably still pre-empts so much space that DEFRAG
cannot run.  So remove it and it will be recreated on
the next reboot.
1.  Measure free HD space and write it down.
2.  Go to DOS and
DELTREE C:\RECYC*
and similarly for drives D:, E: and any others.
3.  Reboot Windows.
Measure free HD space and write it down.
4.  Run SCANDISK
Run  DEFRAG

See my article, "Clean Boot -- What it is and why you need it."

Make sure to run a full Scandisk on the drive before running Defrag.

Thanks for the suggestions.

I hope they get your Defrag working. If all you deleted before were TMP
files, I can't see how that would cause Defrag problems--unless it messed up
the file system.

One other possibility that I'm not sure if I addressed in the Clean Boot
article. It can sometimes help to delete the contents of the APPLOG folder
C:\Windows\Applog is a Hidden folder, so make sure Show All Files is enabled
in Folder Options, View tab.
