I've gotten an error msg about an installation not being able to link to
Shell32.dll.  But I have that file in the Win/System directory.  Is it a
problem with a version?  How do I update/upgrade/replace the one there with
the best copy available?  I have access only to dialup...  Thanks!

Here is some info if this is the type of error message you receive:

I think the best way to explain this error message is to list an example and
then walk you through the troubleshooting logic I'd use.**Example**:  The
LOADWC.EXE file is linked to missing export SHLWAPI.DLL:wnsprintfA

File one is expecting file number two to be able to do something which it
cannot do.  This generally means the second file was replaced with an older
version which doesn't contain the functionality that first file was
expecting to find.  There's a possibility file number two is corrupt or
missing but most likely an older version file is the cause.  In either case,
replace *your* file two with a current (or more current) version.  For help
finding a replacement file, go here and do a search:
http://support.microsoft.com/servicedesks/fileversion/dllinfo.asp

Do a search on *your* file two and be sure to include the file extension
(.dll).  Once the results appear, locate the version of file two that your
PC is using and work up the list.  When you click on the more information
link, you will find what product(s) that version of the .dll is contained
in.  This may give you a clue as to what version of the file should be
there.  For example, you have version 5.0.2614.3500 of the shlwapi.dll on
file and by checking the list of files, you find this version comes with
W98SE.  Going up the list, you find version 5.50.4134.600 is contained in IE
5.50.  If you had updated your browser to IE5.5, there's the problem--the
correct version of shlwapi.dll got overwritten by the copy with comes with
W98SE.

Finally, the troubleshooting information above centers on file two since it
should most likely be the source of the problem; however, file one could be
an incorrect version or it might be corrupt.
**********

If I did not guess right, post back with the error message that you received
verbatim.

I believe you are right on the money!  The shell32.dll on my computer gives a
version which is not reflected on Microsoft's site.  The most common ver on
MS site seems to be associated with IE6sp1, which is installed on my
computer.  I assume that the installation of IE6 did not overwrite an
existing shell32.dll file, leaving an older file version.

I have a CD with IE6sp1 from MS; can I extract the more current version from
that disc?  I looked but did not see a method.  If not, what's the best site
to find the proper version?

Thanks!

Have you already gone to Windows Update and installed all the Critical Updates?  If
no, do so now.

What version of shell32.dll do you have?  With IE6 SP1 installed here on a Win98SE
system, I have version 4.72.3812.600

If you do not have that version and you have been to Windows Update already, install
or reinstall this older update for Win98/98SE:

I have installed all pertinent updates from Microsoft.  I had already
installed IE6sp1 on my Win98DE desktop, but had to get a disc from Microsoft
because I must use a dialup modem because of my physical location.  When I
visited the .dll help site recommended by Ron, I saw where one specific
shell32.dll was used for IE6.  I checked the file present on my computer,
found the ver#, checked that against the help page, the two #s didn't match.
I had to find someone else with the listed version, he sent me the file, I
installed it in place of the older version.  After rebooting, the new program
still wouldn't recognize the shell32.dll.
The old ver was 4.72.3812.600, the new ver is 4.72.3612.1700 (listed as
being for IE6sp1).  I believe I installed IE6 originally because of the need
for that ver of browser because I wanted to use this new program; now that I
have it, the program won't install!  Maybe my copy of the new program is
flawed!  I have no other problems with anything on this computer, not with IE
or OE or anything else I normally use.  I'm mystified, and the new program
owners don't have anything helpful to suggest.

Shell32.dll version 4.72.3812.600 is the newer version for IE6 SP1, and is included
in the update I gave you a link to in my earlier reply.  Version 4.72.3612.1700 is
an older version, from prior to that update.  You have it backwards.

Please give us the name and version of the program you are trying to use, and a link
to their website if you have it.  Also supply the exact error message in its
entirety, word for word, that you get when you try to install the program.

I searched the .dll link you gave me, could not find my ver 38812.600 but
did find 3612.1700 under IE6sp1.  I did it twice.  There seems to be no way
to know which is the most recent version.

The program is eBay's Turbo Lister, which I got downloaded by a friend onto
a CD, in setup format.  http://pages.ebay.com/turbo_lister/ .
The error msg "The SETUPUS.EXE file is linked to missing export
shell32.dll:" and a second msg, " {path} A device attached to the system is
not functioning."

eBay has been no help, except to say to download the program again.  They
have not provided any info as to which ver shell32 is required.  I don't
think they know!

The highest version number is the most recent version.

That TurboLister product seems to have lots of problems <
http://groups.google.com/groups?q=TurboLister&hl=en > and I am thinking that
it (and not the shell32.dll file) may be the problem.

I did another download from a different computer.  The procedure was a bit
different, but I tried to Copy the download from the new host computer to a
CD.  I got a message that some attached files would be lost.  Hmmm.  I tried
the download again and found that the new host's download procedure put the
download files into a temp folder, then continued to transfer them to the CD.
Apparently, when I try to Copy the main T/Lister download from one computer
to a disc, those associated files get lost.  But now it works properly.  It
sure is eBay's problem!

Thanks for all your help and suggestions.
BTW, I was not advised of your last response; I had to re-enter the
discussion thread to find out that there was a response!

Most of the regulars do not provide an email response since valid email
addresses are seldom used and personal email encourages people to contact
others directly instead of using the newsgroup where information can be
shared.

Glad you got it sorted out.

4.72.3812.600 is newer....you go by version number.  3812 is a higher version than
3612.  The last set of digits is the Build of that version.....so it is Build 600 of
version 3812.

As Ron stated, the problem probably lays with the TurboLister setup program itself.

Is there another copy of the older file someplace on your system that
might be being used??  If so make sure you replace ALL older copies on
system with the newer version then reboot.

If it is part of IE6SP1, then go to control panel->Add/Remove Programs.
Double click on "Microsoft Internet Explorer 6 SP1 and Internet Tools".
Click on "Repair Internet Explorer".

If the above does not work, try removing IESP1 and reinstalling it.
