Hello and thank you for taking time to read this.

I'll be as brief as possible. I was given a Dell Inspiration 3500 as
follows:

MODEL#: TS30t AND IS EQUIPED WITH: 5MB Hard Disk;  1.44MB Floppy Disk; does
not have a cd rom device;  Power Supply Input; Line In - Microphone -
Headset Jacks; Xircomm 56K Internal Modem;  1 USB port; 1 Parralell Port; 1
Serial port;  1 External monitor Port; 1 Unknown port about 4.5 " long;  1
External Mouse / Keyboard Attachment Port.

AGAIN (FOR CLARIFICATION OF MY PROBLEM) THE LAPTOP HAS NO CD ROM DEVICE.

The Problem

The unit did at one time have Windows 98SE installed. I don't have the
operating system disks to re-install the operating system to the drive.

I was given this for an upcoming hospital stay for heart surgery. I want to
have a computer to make recuperation go a bit faster. I know for me, time
really does fly when on the computer whatever you're doing (unless it may be
work related- then just the opposite!.

If anyone has any idea for me to solve this problem so that I can get it up
and running? I know it won't be the greatest, but being retired and
disabled, I am happy with whatever God sends my way.

Sincerely,

Mr. Raymond A. Miller

You have not stated what the problem is.  I assume the laptop is not booting
into Windows.  If so, what does it do?  If there are error messages, provide
them verbatim.

By coincidence I was recently given 'exactly' the same laptop.

If you look in c:\windows\options\cabs, all the original install files 'should'
be there. All you have to do is go to that directory & type 'setup' and it'll
reinstall almost without interaction.  Worked for me.

<snip>

i can think of 3 ways to reinstall the OS...but you
will of course need a win98 cd :

1) install a netcard and use a network boot disk
and network the machine to another and copy the win98 setup files from that

2) take the drive out and with an adaptor install it in another machine
and then copy the setup files to the drive...
put it back in the laptop and run setup from there

3) install a cd

or else maybe a lot easier...
just install win95 instead of win98...
that can be installed fairly easily from floppies...
you can probably find them on ebay for just a few dollars

Originally it did have a cd rom.  It uses the hot swap tray where the floppy
drive is now.  Both are removable.  Uses a hot swap software driver as well.

Without a whole lotta research, Dell's parts and support, and a whole lotta
frustration, what you want isn't going to happen.  Hate to say it, but this
is an inappropriate gift to someone with heart problems.
