windows stops responding when any program is run

i'm running windows 98se but everytime i load my computer and try to run a
program it stops responding and all i can do is bring up the task manager by
pressing CTRL+ALT+DELETE and then i have to restart the system.

please can somebody help???

What happens when you boot into safe Mode? If that works, there are various
process/tests you can do to isolate the problem.

Safe mode works fine and i've run my anti-virus programs (avast, bazooka,
spybot & ad-aware) to eliminate some malware but i'm still getting the same
problem when i boot in normal mode.

It may be worth your while to access the MS Knowledge Base and read articles
188867 and 192926. The first one is headed Troubleshooting Windows 98
Startup Problems and the second is How to Perform Clean-Boot Troubleshooting
for Windows 98. Although there are quite a few pages to read on each, I have
found them useful to isolate problems. Although the headings say 98, the
Applies To section also states SE.

Have you exposed this system to malware
(viruses, hijack pgms etc.) ? What are your
basic housekeeping habits (SCANDISK etc.) ?
