My wife uninstalled Norton AV and installed McAfee AV--Startup is now
exceedingly slow--mouse usage is almost impossible --all programs are very
slow to open--problem can be eliminated by disabling McAfee. Have tried
changing settings on McAfee to program files and documents only from all
files--no difference.
AMD K6 (450)--128 mb ram--more than ample HD space--troubleshooting
suggestions appreciated.
Thanks,
Mike

Is there a lot of HDD activity? If so, McAfee needs more memory then what
is available in the system and is using the swapfile. Adding another 128MB
to the system should solve the problem.

McAfee does have a reputation for the "who dropped the anchor?" effect
on computer performance, but then so does Norton.
It may be that your Norton is only partially uninstalled. Normally
you have to use a supplementary uninstaller program in order to
actually get rid of Norton. Symantec has these programs available
from their support website. The one for Norton 2001/2002/2003 is
named RNAV2003.EXE
Good luck

An amd-450 with 128 megs of ram is really not enough to run
McAfee.
The inexpensive solution would be to uninstall McAfee and use a lighter
anti-virus software such as the *free* AVG www.grisoft.com
