Rouke - 24 Jan 2006 08:29 GMT Hello,
This may not be the most appropriate group, but I can't find a better one, if you no of one could you please advise...
On my Windows 98SE machine, Nero 6 expects a CD-R/RW to brun to when I have put a CD-R in the drive. I've spent days trying all sorts of things, including different discs, presumable all possible setting in Nero, and the available settings in the device manager for CDROM and Hard disk controllers. Is there any other place where I should look, or does anyone know of an obvious cause of the problem?
Regards,

Richard G. Harper - 24 Jan 2006 11:06 GMT Have you tried cleaning the drive using a standard audio CD cleaning disc?

Rouke - 27 Jan 2006 10:04 GMT I went, got one and cleaned the lens, then tried to burn again, but still get the same message. Any further help would be appreciated.

Even if Nero is installed, a CD RW drive is supposed to read Cdisks (just like a CD RO drive) under Windows before you run any Nero module. 2. If the drive reads disks OK by itself we need to know more exactly what process fails, viz. which Nero module (identified by Ctl Alt Del) and which version of Nero software. You may get more specialized advice in one of the comp.periphs newsgroups.

Alan - 24 Jan 2006 15:42 GMT I assume your version of Nero will run on Win 98 SE and also have you checked to ensure it has the drivers for your cd drive? Does the software that came with the drive ( e.g. PlexTools with a Plextor Drive) identify disks OK and will that let you burn or not? Alan

1. My son plays games on the PC (logged onto his own user profile) from CD-ROMs, so I presume it reads OK 2. Pressing Ctrl Alt Del shows "Nerosmartstart" and "ISO1 - Nero Burning ROM Enterprise Edition". The version is 6.6.0.14.
I hope you can help me further when you have this information.

It looks as if you mean your Nero software does not burn CDs as it should.
1. Nero software is a whole bundle of modules e.g. (Nero v.6, as listed by Belarc) Ahead software - NeroMediaPlayer Version 1, 4, 0, 21* Ahead Software AG - Cover Designer Version 2, 3, 0, 6* Ahead Software AG - InfoTool Application Version 2, 2, 1, 0* Ahead Software AG - Nero Burning ROM Version 6, 3, 1, 12* Ahead Software: Nero Fast CD-Burning Plug-in Ahead Software AG - Nero CD - DVD Speed Version 2, 2, 0, 0* Ahead Software AG - Nero DriveSpeed Version 2, 0, 0, 1* Ahead software AG - Nero ShowTime Version 1, 5, 0, 23* Ahead Software AG - Nero SoundTrax Version 1, 0, 0, 26* Ahead Software AG - Nero StartSmart Version 1, 0, 1, 15* Ahead Software AG - NeroVision Version 2,1,2,10*
The module you want to copy files to a CD is "Nero Express" (as listed by Ctl Alt Del.)
2. If you have the Nero CD, the simplest route is probably to uninstal everything then reinstal from the CD.

Rouke - 26 Jan 2006 08:50 GMT Hi Don,
I uninstalled Nero, installed it from disk (so the reader still reads OK) but I still get the same error message as before. Are there any settings in the Device Manager or BIOS that I could look at?

Nero detects the type of disc correctly.
1st. Nero tells me that the disc has to be empty. Is that so? 2nd. Quick delete wasn't good enough. Nero kept teling me that the disc wasn't empty. 3rd. After a full delete Nero kept waiting for the disk.. (Nero stopped responding and the system got "dangerously low in resources". 4th. Reset the machine. 5th. With CD-RW in the drive, Nero tells me:
CD-R/RW 24X10: Waiting for Disc
Please insert the disc to write to...
Disk required for the compilation: CD-R/RW Disc type in the recorder: CD-RW
and still refuses to burn....
I hope this information can help someone help me....

Were upperfilters and lowerfilters applicable with 9x? If so is there an "easy" method to reset them? Additionally, could that be the problem?
