Win98 very slow to boot up

Last week I fooled with my LinkSys LNE100 network card. Now WIN98 (1st
edition) boots very slow. It stays on the blank desktop for over 1 1/2
minutes, then the icons start to load. I reinstalled the network card
drivers several times, did updated NAV scans, spyware checks etc. A boot log
analysis shows Ndis2sup.vxd failed( but I read that's normal). This is not a
ram problem or such. There must be some setting or conflict with something.
I suspect that windows is having a hard time finding something (like a
network ) at start up. Any ideas, either network or other?  Thanks .

Hi Steve.

Are you using BLA.EXE to do the bootlog analysis?   If so then use the
"show delays" function in the program and it will select only those
startup items that are taking a lot of time.  That should show you
where the problem lies.

Good luck

Ron,
I am using BLA.exe and set it to show delays. There are about 15 items from
.278 seconds to the highest of 10.778 seconds (IFSHLP.SYS). Do you have any
other suggestions? Thanks.

Sorry for the delay in getting back to you.   I have been away for a
few days.

I was anticipating that BLA would show a major delay on a network
related item, indicating that whatever you had done with the network
card was the likely culprit.

Here is a link to a web page where a similar problem was solved
(eventually).

I tried the things shown on the site below with no luck. I also reinstalled
a lower version of my video card driver, and also tried a newer version, but
it didn't help. Anyone have any ideas to eliminate the slow start up?
Thanks. Steve

How fast does it boot in Safe Mode?

The same time in safe mode, about 3 minutes. I just doublechecked it. Steve

Given it occurs in Safe Mode also - still not sure if you have a HW or SW
issue.  Can you tell if the HD immediately boots after POST (for that matter
how long does POST take) or if it takes time to begin the boot process (e.g.
HD not spinning up fast enough)?  Another idea, if you've already posted
this I apologize, do you have a list of your startup items?  You can create
one using Startuplist available here:

http://www.spywareinfo.com/~merijn/downloads.html

Look through the list, or post it here, to see if anything is out of the
ordinary or unexplainable.

I am a stickler for having nothing in my startup list. However, I was amazed
at the amount of all the little processes and apps that started when I ran
the Startup List program. It's a cool little program. But I assume
everything there was required. I have nothing checked in the MSconfig
startup utility. The hard drive is intermittently active/inactive after the
desktop loads( for the 3 minutes while it waits to load the desktop icons).
Then the icons all of a sudden load within 5 seconds. The POST takes about
10-15 seconds and the HD light is flickering. I believe this is a software
problem in such that the system is searching/waiting for something before it
releases control to the desktop. There must be some setting or conflict
somewhere.
PS- I can copy/paste the starup list (long) if you need to see it.

I would expect BLA to capture the delay between two (multiple) events if
it's somewhere in the boot process.  Have you tried Step-byStep booting to
see if anything in particular is taking very long (F8 during POST - select
Step by Step Confirmation)?  Other boot options to experiment with can be
found here:

http://www.winguides.com/registry/display.php/1268/

Focusing on HW you could:

* Disconnect CDROMs, other HDs, any other non-essential HW
* Use partial memory, e.g. take out stick(s)

Time consuming options include:

* Image partition to a different drive - try the different drive
* Fresh reinstall OS

Troubleshooting can be somewhat open-ended until you can repeat or isolate
the problem or until you have enough clues to formulate a reasonable
hypothesis one can test.  If you find the problem, I for one am curious as
to what it is.
