Hello - I'm getting emails and browsing using Avant, but if I open up a DOS
window and to ping www.ibm.com, I get Timeout messages.  I'm not sure this
is the problem, but I have a firewall, Tiny Personal Firewall, but I do not
know what setting is causing ping to not work.  Or if that is the problem.
What should I look for?  Are there any other places to look?

Thanks,
Tony

What happens if you type that address into your browser?  Does it work then?

Yes, that works.

What site does it take you to?

Sorry, I do not understand your question.  When I enter in www.ibm.com in
the addr field of my browser it takes me to ibm.com.

But ping does not work to any site.

When I enter that address (or click on the link in your message) I get taken
to http://www.ibm.com/us/.  That is the address you should be attempting to
ping.

You can confirm this by doing IPCONFIG /all to find the IP address of your
DNS server, and trying to ping that.

Ping will not work with most Web sites.  Just about every major web site
(and most of the smaller ones as well) block pings since they can either be
used to discover sites and servers or can be maliciously modified to crash a
system.

Yahoo (www.yahoo.com) still responds to ping commands.  I use it quite
often when checking out Internet access problems.

I just tried PING  www.yahoo.com in a DOS window and I get the same message,
Request Timed Out.

Is there something in either my networking settings or my firewall settings
that might be preventing Ping from working?

Yes, I agree that is what you should get, but I do not.  How can I fix this?
Is there a debug guide somewhere to help me sort out where the problem is,
network settings, firewall, or ??

I found the problem.  I had the ICMP messages turned off in my firewall.
Once I enabled them, ping works as expected.

Thanks anyway.
