From time to time when I wants to shut the PC ("shut down") it get stuck.

Seems like the "shut down" proccess is running but get stuck on a black
screen.

The only option then is to push the "power" or "reset" botton.

Any idea ??? if extra data is needed ...

Included my standart hijackthis log.

Click on the Advanced button at lower right, then put a check mark in
"Disable Fast Shutdown" (if it exists.) Click OK and restart. If the
"Disable Fast Shutdown" item is not present, or if it is present but "grayed
out", then post back. If this doesn't help, then post back.

Then, unfortunately, the Shutdown Supplement patch has already been applied
to your system. You have to do it the hard way. There are innumerable
possible problems that can lead to this issue, mostly having to do with
hardware. The Shutdown troubleshooter to follow is found here:
http://aumha.org/win4/a/shutdown.htm

Thank you

There is no access to http://aumha.org/win4/a/shutdown.htm ("The page cannot
be displayed") at this stage I will try it later.

There shouldn't be any problem with that link. Do you get an error page?

Must be your Security settings or some other application that is supposedly
"protecting" your system. Two things to suggest: 1. Fix whatever it is that
is being overzealous in guarding your system, and/or 2. Put *.aumha.org into
your Trusted Zone.

Can you get to www.aumha.org at all? If not, I have to think it's some
protective software that uses the HOSTS file or something similar. If you
can get to the home page, try a few different pages within the site. This is
very curious.

I've put in a note to the webmaster. Maybe he'll have an idea or two. No,
wait, that email bounced. Weirder and weirder...

Oh well, I can find other addresses for him. Patience.

No, I can not access  :
http://aumha.org
and 66.39.115.252
I do access :
http://aumha.net/viewforum.php?f=31
and http://forum.aumha.org/viewforum.php?f=30 ...

Is this bring the same data for my issue?? :

No, Jim goes much more deeply into hardware-related issues, which are where
this problem becomes most difficult.

If you can't even access the IP address directly, that's something that's
beyond my abilities, other than to again suggest that some protective
utility has blacklisted the site for some reason. Suggest you try a Clean
Boot and again try the site.

Jim suggests you try the IP number itself:
66.39.115.252

Is there any change?

There has been an index file name change or an alias is being used.  I
get the web pages to come up with this link.  Note the difference ---
it's not "shutdown.htm":
http://aumha.org/win4/a/shtdwnse.htm

There are two different pages. http://aumha.org/win4/a/shutdown.htm deals
with shutdown problems in general, whereas
http://aumha.org/win4/a/shtdwnse.htm deals with Windows 98 Second Edition
issues only. I have no problem reaching either.

Gary,

Thanks for your help but it worked for me after following these steps:

1) Disabling 'Fast Shutdown', Applying change and then shutdown PC
2) Start PC
3) Enabling 'Fast Shutdown', Applying change and then shutdown PC
4) Start PC

This procedure has left me with a PC that will complete shutdown in <10 Secs
albeit a 300 Mhz PII. A great improvement.

Thanks again...    Pete Ellinger

Glad to hear you got it licked. I'm still perplexed by the website issues,
but I'm also convinced it's something to do with security on your own
system, or just possibly your ISP.

Thanks for the report back. I've never heard any reports that were quite the
same as yours. Verrrry interesting...
