Tasks in order:
1 Are the external speakers OK? Test them
in a different PC.
2. If your motherboard has Sound-on-Board, it
may have failed. Test a cheap 16-bit sound card.
(This probably requires disabling SoB in BIOS
first.)
Post results here and we may be able to
suggest the next step. Several web sites offer
suggestions (but none helped when my SoB
recently failed as in #2.)

As Don said, you have to rule out the hardware first so test those speakers.
If the speakers work, check your volume control in the systray to see if
Mute has been set. If not, boot to Safe Mode. Open the Control Panel to
Sounds..... and delete all entries. Reboot and let Windows detect the
sound card. Have the driver for your sound card ready to install.

Checked for Volume Control in Systray but it is absent. Further, when I
click on Volume control thru \Programs\Accessories\Entertainment, nothing
happens.
How do I get Volume control back?

Volume Control in Systray is a checkbox setting
in / Control Panel / Multimedia.
As RB posted, we need to know what Sound & Game
controllers appear in / Control Panel / Device Manager
-- and the commonsense cure for defective installation
is to remove these items from / Dev Mgr. and reboot
so the OS detects and reinstals them.

The box is NOT available to be checked. In fact, nothing on the Audio page
is available...

So do the other things recommended in replies
to your posts, and report results here.

Gentlemen
As directed, I finally finished checking everthing and re-installing the

Thanks for all your help.

Reinstall the sound card drivers, per Ron's instructions.
