I can only restart my computer normally when unplugging both of my IDE
Controllers from the mother board. I can start up in safemode. How do I fix
this so I can reboot normally with both controllers plugged in?

You still have not replied to MVP Bill Blanton's request in your thread from last
week on the same subject (in win98.gen_discussion) to post a log from partinfo.exe

drive may have installed the overlay. They have been known to sometimes
do that, even when not needed.

As I have asked previously, please stick with your original thread instead of
starting new ones with no pertinent info. This is at least your third thread on the

It's kinda hard to post the partinfo for the drive in question when I can't
get the machine to start up with the damn drive plugged in. Now, I'm open to
you helping me so either help or don't reply. I've posted replys back to Bill
yesterday but there's no response and I'm tired of waiting and wasting an
entire day for a response that doesn't come. So I'm not going to put all my
eggs in his basket. You seem to know what has been going on since you're my
internet dad so why is it you don't have anything usefull to add in fixing my
IDE problems?????

I *am* trying to help you. Your post here left out almost all pertinent info, such
as the fact that your boot drive is SCSI. Also, your thread "Primary IDE Controller
error" in win98.gen_discussion has no reply from you to Bill Blanton after 3 August,
and no reply to his last post.

How do you know the BIOS "sees" the 80GB drive if the machine won't start up with
the drive plugged in? If you can get to the boot screens recognising the drive
while it is connected, then you should be able to follow Bill's instructions to run
partinfo *From a Floppy Boot*.

Can you get at least as far as the boot screens and BIOS setup with the drive
connected?
Can you boot with a boot floppy while the drive is connected?
Do you have access to another computer where you can install the drive as a slave
and try to run partinfo *from a boot floppy*?

I doubt you will find anyone in the groups with more knowledge than Bill of hard
drives and boot issues, so I suggest you avail yourself of his expertise. Whether
you choose to is up to you.

I've replied TWICE to Bills last post with partinfo and stated that I can
only get the machine to boot into safemode with the drive plugged in. And
when running partinfo in safemode with the drive plugged in freezes my
machine right after launching the program. I can get into the BIOS at the
startup screen by hitting del, detect IDE Devices, and it reads the 80GB
drive. Is this not the way to see what the BIOS sees? I have been considering
hooking it up to another machine. I didn't get back to Bill for those few
days because I had to go out of town. I guess I forgot to have you sign my
permission slip. Truth is is that I didn't think you'd let me go to the zoo
with all the other kids so I forged your signature. Sorry about that. Your
the best internet dad in the whole wide world!! Any other ideas for a
freezing machine?

OK, I have looked through your original thread in win98.gen_discussion on three
different servers, and they all show your last reply to Bill was on August 3, there
were only two posts and replies between you and Bill, and you did not state any of
the info in those two replies that you claim to have posted to him. Did you perhaps
email him instead of posting?

BE THAT AS IT MAY, you state you can boot into Safe Mode with the problem drive
plugged in. If you can start in Safe Mode with the drive plugged in, you surely can
boot with a boot floppy while the drive is plugged in. If you also copy the
executable file "partinfo.exe" to the boot floppy, you can run it from the command
prompt while booted from the floppy.

Boot with the floppy, type the following and press Enter:
partinfo > a:\partinfo.txt
(note the spaces and >)

Take the floppy to another machine, open a:\partinfo.txt in notepad, copy and paste
the results to me or to Bill.

Here's the two messages I replied to Bill with on Aug. 9th:
"It sees 80GB capacity. Do I run the overlay program from the western digital
set up cd? I can't get Windows to boot normally with my IDE controllers
plugged in. I have to remove both in order to boot normally. It will boot
into safemode only with the controllers plugged in. Can I run the overlay in
safemode?"

"I tried to run partinfo in safemode with the WD plugged in and it freezes
the
machine when it executes partinfo. With the WD unplugged from the motherboard
it runs just fine. Just to let you know."

That's odd that it doesn't show up. I have viewed these posts from four
different machines the last few days and they've all shown up as responses.
I'll try the partinfo thing again and hopefully it doesn't freeze my machine
like it did before. If it does I guess I'll install the drive on anonther
machine. That being the case, how can I start my machine normally with the
IDE controllers plugged in?

I dunno why they do not appear here....aggravating, that. From Bill's lack of
reply, I suspect he did not see any replies either. Bummer.

Let us know when you try the floppy boot, and if partinfo supplies the text file
from there.
