which is software to put usb of win 98 to recognize the devices of usb,I
tried to install the software that microft gives that it was published 99,
but keep equal. without recognizing usb.

If you are trying to get a Windows 98 system to recognize and use a
USB flash memory "stick" this may help.

Windows 98 *SECOND EDITION* driver for USB storage devices.

This driver will provide support for a wide variety of "mass storage"
USB devices in Windows 98 Second Edition. A mass storage device is
anything that will store files. Examples are:

- Flash memory sticks

- External Hard drives

- External CD drives

- Digital Cameras

- Mp3 Music players

Examples of things it will NOT support :

- USB mouse or trackball

- USB keyboard

- USB Printer

- USB Networking

Before you install the driver be sure you are using Windows 98 Second
edition. To verify this go to; Start | Settings | Control Panel |
System | General tab. This tab should report the system as "Microsoft
Windows 98 Second Edition".

Before you install the driver close all other running applications. To
install the driver double click on the file "nusb31e.exe" and follow
the instructions.

After the driver has been installed plug a USB storage device into a
USB port. Windows will display a "New Hardware Found" message and ask
where the driver is located. Use the "Browse" button and file/folder
tree to navigate to the folder - C:\Windows\Inf - and click OK. If the
driver can identify the device it will load and you will have an
"Insert/Remove Device" icon in the system tray just like Windows XP or
Windows 2000. You will also have access to the device from Windows
Explorer and the file open or save dialog boxes generated by
application programs.

You will only have to go through the "New Hardware Found" procedure
the FIRST time you use each type of USB device. Once the driver has
successfully identified a device it will load automatically whenever
that type of device is inserted.

Before you physically remove a USB device click on the "Remove Device"
icon in the system tray. This will bring up a list of the USB devices
the driver is currently supporting and you can click on the one you
want to "Stop". When the device has been properly closed and stopped a
message window will open saying the device can now be safely removed
from the system. Click OK or press enter to close the message box and
remove the device from the USB port.

I don't believe Win98SE gives you the "Remove Device" icon in the system tray.

Also, for the original poster: you can buy a decent PCI USB2.0 card for less
than $15 US and it will greatly speed up any downloading through USB. For a few
dollars more, you can get a combo card: USB and FireWire.

Buffalo:

The icon in the system tray is provided with the USB driver I referred
to. I assumed the OP already had a USB port of some kind. I can verify
from personal experience that the dirver works with both USB 1 and 2.

I can also verify what you have posted, John. The driver you linked to provides the
system tray icon. I have used the v.2x driver on a number of Win98 machines to
support a variety of memory sticks. The current v.3x driver provides its own USB
2.0 support.
