I want to build a Windows 98 computer. I'm seeking help finding hardware
compatible with Windows 98. I need manufacturer model numbers please.
TIA

There is *lots* of hardware that is compatible with Windows 98.
However
much of the newer hardware that is available now may not work at all
under Windows 98.  Any hardware over 5 or 6 years old has a better
chance
of working.

Thank you for replying. I assumed it was obvious that I meant currently
available hardware. I plan to persue my goal using the currently available
hardware. I would not be adverse to buying hardware that is outdated but in
new condition.
Thanks

Look here:

http://www.msfn.org/board/Modern_motherboards_working_Windows_9_t97588.html

Read the entire thread.

I personally recommend this board:

http://www.asrock.com/mb/overview.asp?Model=4COREDUAL-VSTA

It has both AGP and PCI-e slots, can take DDR-2 and DDR memory, and
supports socket 775 Core/Core-2/Quad-core CPU's (although the most
practical Intel CPU for running win-98 is probably the 3.6 ghz
celeron).

I would safe if I could find a page on the asrock site where is says that
this mother board is compatiable with WIN98. So far I haven't been able to
find such a page. Is there such a page? If so can you give a link to it?

No, there is no such page.

No (new) motherboard sold today, or for the past 2 years at least,
will claim to be compatible with Windows 98.

If you read the msfn thread, you would see that there is win-98 driver
support for several chipsets that are used in new motherboards.

There is one motherboard component that I haven't ever seen win-98
driver support for - and that's the HD audio component that started to
appear on motherboards 2 or 3 years ago.

So you can fart around and try to find an old legacy motherboard
(either used, or new-in-box) that dates from 2003, or you can take a
chance on one of the boards mentioned in that thread.

I assumed you were saying that the board you recommended definitely supports
WIN98. My mistake. As for the thread It's long, rambling and the authors
first language is not English which makes an already challenging subject
just that much harder to understand. If I possibly can I like to avoid
taking risks when making a purchase. I do however appreciate you input.

I don't know the vintage but I have found a board that supports WIN98:

I'm curios to know if it's still in production or what it's vintage is.
Perhaps you might know? This would make a good subject for an FAQ by someone
who's first language is English.
Thanks

Yes, I've installed win-98 on a system with the Asrock motherboard -
specifically the DUAL VSTA board (intel CPU, Via PT880 chipset.  I've
since bought what I think is a revision to that board, the
previously-mentioned 4core Dual VSTA, which I believe is basically
identical except for supporting the quad-core CPU's.

The board supports Athlon and Sempron (socket 754).  I'm not that
familliar with AMD CPU's, but the Sempron was the successor /
replacement for the Duron.  Word of the Sempron first emerged in mid
2004, and it probably started shipping in August or Sept 2004.

The board uses the Nvidia Nforce 3 chipset, which appears to have
win-98 drivers.

You should make sure you can get a socket 754 CPU to go with that
board.  I did a quick look and didn't see anyone offering such a CPU.
If this is true, then you'd have better luck getting a socket 939 CPU
(if you stick with AMD).  You might want to look at this board:

http://www.asrock.com/mb/overview.asp?Model=939Dual-VSTA&s=939

It uses the ULi M1695 chipset, which seems to have win-98 support:

Hi pcbuilder98,

Be warn! There is a limit of the amount of memory that can be installed
with Windows 98 or 98 SE. The limit is 1 GB. You won't be able to access
Safe Mode for Windows 98, if more than 1 GB or ram is installed.
